Scholars is closed for the summer, stables was closed for the last few weeks, but that was due to renovation. Its open again.

I was in the stables last night. They've revarnished the floors. Nothing else much has changed. Scholars is still closed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,621 ✭✭✭GreenHell

Scholars has really gone down hill over the last two years. Food was **** inside there last year and the music is crap. They really need to do something about a smoking area as well.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,922 ✭✭✭Dave

The scholars has probably the best food on campus. Far nicer than the stables muck and the paddocks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,621 ✭✭✭GreenHell

They got new catering people in after christmas, food was ****e after that.

Regardless it still beats the Stables and the Paddocks.

Eat at home/Sports bar/Csis/Rolls from the shop/The bins across from laundret beat the pants off stables, scholars and the paddock for food.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 374 ✭✭IceHawk

Paddock is ok if you get there early enough, about 12:00 is good. I think the sports bar is the best place for food on campus, although I fell in love with the sizzling sausage company for a while. Good value food there, and it's generally not bad.

The chicken rolls in the SU are easily the greatest food on campus. And in the world in general.

Scholars does some fantastic breakfast, always has.

I'll miss those two while on coop!

All I eat is a €1.20 sausage baguette from the students union shop and either a pint of milk or a yop. The best value in Ireland. Most shops wouldn't spit on you for €1.20.

Garlic and Cheese "diced" potato from the paddocks. well dacent

Remember when it used to cost €1.00?
Or when the wedge roll was only €1.70?
I used to eat that all the time until they hiked it up to €3.50. Ya see first, they get ya hooked, and then bam! Sorry for going off topic...

The hot chicken roll being a perfect example of this. It was €4 last year, I heard stories of €2 or €2.50 the year before I started. True it is the most wonderful food that can be got on campus, my personal favourite combination of mayonaize, cheese and stuffing, drooling at just the thought, but thats no reason to fleese us hungry students.

Iv seen cleaning ppl going in and out of the scholars lately tho - looked like they were getting ready to re-open. i just presumed it was closed for the summer! - thats gotta be it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 829 ✭✭✭kodute

Maybe they were cleaning stuff out of the place, chairs, taps, etc. How do you know? Ive got hear-say (not the band) on my side.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,424 ✭✭✭440Hz

hmmmm - they would never close it. what are the choices then: poppy stables or preppy sports bar!! (oops, bet im in trouble now). but where do the anti-sheep go now?

really?? but scholars is part of dolans, and the last time i checked dolans were doing very well for themselves

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 829 ✭✭✭kodute

yes dolans is doing well, but if scholars isn't then why continue with it draining dolans money?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,268 ✭✭✭Zapho

If Dolans sold Scholars, it doesn't necessarily mean that its gonna stay closed. Somebody is bound to jump at the chance to run a bar on campus. Look how well the Stables is doing, that takes in some amount of cash!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,688 ✭✭✭✭Mr. CooL ICE

Yeah kodute, ive got the feeling that youre talking out of your ass.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 829 ✭✭✭kodute

you like feeling YOUR ass. Oooh yeah :D

nah seriously thats what i heard from someone in the (supposed) know.
    Don't shoot the messenger.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,424 ✭✭✭440Hz

Scholars has def gotta be taking in loads of cash - think bout the food alone, that brings in a fair penny id say. maybe the question is not what they are taking in, but what they cld be pissing it away on?? im sure they have no probs making the cash... all the same tho, i wld be really surprised if it doesnt open soon

Unless someone had the idea to open up a juice bar <.....pause for reaction.....> seen as
they were suggesting it for so long. Or maybe a snooker club! Now that wouldn't be
    so bad!

  • Moderators, Education Moderators Posts: 2,432 Mod ✭✭✭✭Peteee

The scholars has gotta be raking in the cash, sure its not as popular as the stables, but it's plenty popular, to keep afloat at the very least.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,396 ✭✭✭✭kaimera

    ehh... ^^^^ ditto.

    *shrug*

    good things about scholars
1)they do the decent end of lots of musical styles.
2)they dont serve wheatgerm juice of whatever it is these juice bars sell.
3)fine big hairy pint of fosters for only €3
    4)the food, naturally
5)the drinking game u play with the straw to see how wasted u are.(i am aware it has a much nobler cause, but 'who's the drunkest' competitions are funny, and i defy anyone who tells me they're nay so.)
5)each to their own, but i far prefer scholars to stables, due to the lesser amounts of eejits peeing against doors on a thursday night.
    6)the gravy.

    *chuckle*

teh drinking game is always a good reason to go :D

oh, and the lack of eejits is very true.

Ah, yes, I'd forgotten the gravy. The consistency of tar, and the taste of heaven. Scholars, we hardly knew thee.

Seriously*, The scholars only did good business five nights a week, for about eight months of the year, so it's quite possible that while it was making money over the term, it was losing money overall. Plus, how many pint glasses have 'disappeared' from there over the years? It must be thousands. That was probably the final crippling blow to the owners. Shame on you all who took glasses

I'm staying resolutely cynical about it closing though. Some would call it denial. I call it 'Pretending it won't happen in the hope that it might come true'.

*Actually, I don't want to imply that I don't take the gravy seriously, because I do.

I know someone who stole a staplegun from scholars. Is that why theyre in financial difficulty? And is that someone going to go to hell?

well worst case scenario (it does close) then at least you got some memorabilia Petee. you could see whatever you've got on boards and give the money to the owners of scholars as penance!!
    same goes for stapler boy/girl

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 829 ✭✭✭kodute

ah i too must admit my part in the downfall of the scholars, we have one of those cloth Heineken railing banners adorning our sitting room. The financial burden of having to replace their queueing system might have been too much.

Dammned if I can remember which glass it was. :D

In fact it was probably smashed that night we broke all those glasses last year!

I took a crap load of beermats one night too! Or maybe it was the time I pillaged them for about 4 _free_ Coors lights one night.

Has anyone actually confirmed its closed properly or is it still all rumour and innuendo?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,396 ✭✭✭✭kaimera

    dont worry about pint glasses.

I'll bring a case with me when I go down :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,268 ✭✭✭Zapho

I nearly got one of those Erdinger glasses. I had the great idea to hide it in a bag belonging to a girl I didn't know when she wasn't looking. It seemed like a good idea at the time.

And whats this about the gravy? You're right IceHawk, it does have the consistancy of tar, and to me it also tasted like tar leaving me to believe that it was infact, tar! And then you get people ordering a plate of chips and gravy, thats what ketchup is for people!
