Well, I may already be in Tullamore, so I may either go directly to Dublin to "escort" you guys up, or I'll meet you at Tullamore station at your arrival time (I'll just get a day return or something). Either way is good for me though :)

Unless of course there's anything to be worried about, like the supposed Elemental in Leap Castle. Christ that thing scared the **** out of me in a documentary that I saw.

I should prolly address this point and say that there's nothing like the elemental at Leap Castle at Charleville. Charleville is a relatively safe enviornment. I say relatively safe because there's bound to be some physical danger, as the castle is under constatant restoration. To this note, I'll be requiring each attendee to sign a waiver form, stating the usual stuff that you see on a waiver form... which I, ah... still gotta research. :o

So is there anything that we shouldn't bring to the castle, of course i'd take it as given that we shouldnt bring alcohol onto the premises & even though i am not a smoker i'm asking incase someone wants to know - smoking in the castle is prohibited?

oh the the real reason i did this reply was to see if my signature is working?

You have to subscribe to use your own image as an avatar (site wide thing, nothing mods can do about it). There should be the option in your User CP, €50 for the year iirc, I think there's a fiver monthly option too.

Smoking outside the castle is, yes. But, you should be able to smoke outside it... I wouldn't recommend having any alcohol with you before the investigation as if you are either drunk or otherwise inebriated you can't go on an investigation, both for safety reasons and for the fact that anything you see will have to be dismissed as well. This goes for even one pint. As the leader of another group has said "Even one pint can affect you." Of course, I don't mind if you want to have a few pints after the event to celebrate a successful investigation... hell, if I weren't so pressed to get back to England on Sunday, I might be inclined to join you for a pint or two...

I'll be more than likely explaining these things over the course of the day. We can have a gathering to address any questions about the place and any investigation policies or concerns or stuff.

I'd actually be interested in tagging along on this if there is still room.

I can also provide good deal of AV equipment for the investigation.

I'll be driving from Sligo, what time should I aim to be in Tullamore by? And is there a specified meeting place in the town where we will all gather and then head to the castle together? I can give anyone else a lift, if there is anyone on my route, or anyone who wants a list from Tullamore town out to the castle. Can take three passengers.

Well, the people would be arriving at the station at about 12:45.
And is there a specified meeting place in the town where we will all gather and then head to the castle together?

That hasn't been sorted yet, but rest assured I'll arrange that closer to the date.

I'm not sure how many people would be on your route, but giving people a lift to the castle would be very much appriciated. Thanks for the offer.

So does anyone have any particular experiements or tests they'd like to set up down there? Like Kennett said the should be like 4 groups of 4 which suits me coz where as i'd have no problem being in a place on my own i have a problem with stairs ... i get really nervous on them!! was told i died by falling down stairs in apast life by a reader who had no idea of my fear but i guess that might explain it.

Who's getting the train from Heuston with me?

I've been thinking of picking up a few cheap radio-cassettes and trying to pick up some EVP, I haven't looked into it enough yet but it seems reasonable that there'd be a higher chance of it working somewhere 'active'.

I would have been ok wandering around on my own, changing the tapes every now and then untill your post reminded me about a recurring dream about falling down stairs I used to have as a kid. I think I even remember roughly what they looked like, if I see them I'm running away plain and simple. I can see the headlines now.....
    Paranormal Investigation Goes Horribly Wrong

A paranormal investigation at Charleville Castle went horribly wrong Saturday, as all the investigators involved refused to climb a flight of stairs leading into the building......

I'm currently in Manchester at the moment, soI haven't been able to do any followups of any sort, seeing as I can't access my gmail at the moment. Going to try another net face where I can actually read everything, warts and all. Anyway, while here I stumbled upon the famous Brannigans Pub, as seen on Most Haunted. I may end up arranging an investigation there as well down the line, though it would prolly be for the UK group I'm in first, as we'd need to arrange things a bit better for you guys, seeing as though you have to come from overseas, which isn't cheap. I oly found out about the place because of a mention by one of the locals of a place called Albert Hall, just ff the G-Mex tramstop. Anyway, I saw the pu and I got shivers up my spine seeing the place. I was like "wow"! I kinda phoned up my mum as well at the time, lol :o

Anyway, I'm heading back today, so I'll be able to do proper followups on Tuesday, as opposed to just looking at stuff, unless of course, it's email correspondance, then I'll respond to it sometime today. Or better yet, if you have an email pending for me, drop me a PM here and I'll make a note to read it.

    Andy

PS: Am I the only one who will climb the stairs then? Wusses. :p

I really want to go. I'm having unfounded doubts though. Im 21, still live with my parents and they really don't like the idea. I have no intention of letting that stop me but there is of course also the cost of getting a train down, spending a night in a freaking half abandoned castle.

Then of course there's all those stairs... *shudder* :p

Also, I have like, no equipment. I can bring one rather old digital camera and one much newer digital camcorder. I'd love to do some EVP but I don't have a cassette thingy. But that couldn't be hard or expensive to get I suppose...

EDIT: Oh, and I'm back to college the next day. But yeah ok Dublin6th, you've got me, I'll get the train down with you. I might bring a friend for comfort, although he might just be far too much of a pussy...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,247 ✭✭✭✭6th

Well bring the digital camera along & the camcorder, they are perfectly acceptable equipment, i dont think everyone is expected to bring down state-of-the-art AREA51 M.I.B. issue hardware!

The train is €27 euro return and i'll be at heuston for about 11am on the saturday, so "Come one, Come all"

I'll email you (Zillah) and anyone else who's getting the train down my mobile number.

As for Kennett, if you'd prefere we can just meet us at Tullamore to save you coming back to dublin & then we just have to find our way to the castle (thats were you come in!!)

Lets get all our questions asked in the next week kids so we know what we're at!

Well, people live there... it's not half-abandoned, just that the place is big, lol. When I was your age and living with my mum, she was fine with the idea, though all parents are different, right? And I'm quite aware I made myself sound like an old git, even though I'm 1.5 years older than you :p

Your experience of the castle will be quite limited then, seeing as the castle has about 4 sets of stairs ;):p

Damnit, I wanted a Cricket :( Er, anyway... yes, that equipment is perfect, as is anything else you think would be useful.

    I won't, for I'll be there ;)

I suddenly remember the Mighty Mouse theme song... :D But yeah, I can meet you guys at the station. Some might have to walk, or I could organise a taxi, or... if you really want to risk it, I could drive you guys up the road, but keep in mind I'm not a licenced driver, so if anyone who can drive wants to use the "transport", feel free... else you can watch me screw up my clutchwork, lol

One thing I need to bring up though is the cost. Seems that it'll cost some money per person to stay over and investigate. The proceeds of which go towards the castle restoration. However, despite this, it'll still be worthwhile. I'm negotiating a deal at the moment. I was quoted 30 Stg, however, I explained that no one but me dealt with Sterling, so it's now dealt with in Euros. Dudley suggested 40 Euro, or 45 with some stew as well. Do you guys think this is reasonable? I should note that whatever goes on, I'm not liable to pay, as I'm a member of the castle volunteers. Also, it seems that in addition to this, we get back 10% of the total to help with expenses and stuff.

If anyone believes this offer to be reasonable/unreasonable or can think of a better price, please let me know, and I can suggest it to Dudley.

    Andy

That's really a lot for one nights stay in an empty castle. Does this still include chores during the day? I really hope the train is 27 for a return ticket, if not then I fear that'll be the straw that broke my wallets back. I have no money at the moment...

    Some further questions...

How do we get from the train station to the Castle? I am utterly useless outside a large city. Can we hop in a taxi?

Do the dublin adventurers want to meet upon, maybe on friday, even just for lunch in town or something to make it easier on all of us. I know some of you were at The Bleeding Horse but it'd be nice to get introductions out of the wat before the day itself.

So, we sleep there. We bring sleeping bags yes? So we just camp out on the floor? Is the castle currently lived in? Just how big is it?

    EDIT: Who's Dudley?

Well, you can either walk, or take a taxi. It's about 5 quid to the castle, the taxi drivers know the place well, from what I've seen.

I'd prolly be in Tullamore on that Friday, so I'm up for whatever you have planned.

Catle has 65 rooms total, and it's somewhat lived-in. Sleeping bags would prolly be a good idea, if you have them. There are some beds there mind. Dudley is reserving the place for us that weekend.

    First things first!

hi Gerry, welcome to the paranormal board and congrats on the upcoming wedding! Now as for the investigation, its the weekend of the 24th/25th Sept so thats a week after your bigday.

Kennett, price is fine, however if they want us to do some work lets say 3 hours 2.30pm - 5.30pm, giving us time to clean up, prepare for the night & maybe even get a bit of grub in!

We have 15 bodies at €40 is €600 - so if 15 people do 3 hours work and the minium wage is €7.74 (i think) - thats 15 x €7.74 = €116.10 x 3(hours) = €348.30. That brings the €600 down to €251.70 - thats 16.78 each - but seeing as some people may not turn up and they are doing us a favour by letting us stay in the first place maybe we could explain this and offer €25 each plus 3 hours work? thats €375 cash + labour.

Of course like i said if it comes to it i am prepared to do no work and pay the €40 - whatever you can sort out Andy is good.

Oh and any chance we can get the poll changes to save confusion?

I'll be driving down so I can give you a lift if you want.

If you do that means I'll be going Leixlip->Coolock->Tullamore (which'll bring me by Heuston at least once) so if anyone else has lots of stuff I can stop by and pick it up or take a couple of other people.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,247 ✭✭✭✭6th

Hey Steven I’m gonna brainwash the heuston group on the way there and recruit them into my cult! .... So hands off!!

So what are the actual numbers now?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 857 ✭✭✭Dagon

I'm a bit low on cash myself, didn't realise it would be €40 for the night. €16 sounds much better, and I have no problems putting in some manual labour. :)

By the way, if anyone wants a lift from Tullamore Station to the Castle let me know, I can bring three (although I'll need directions!).

Excellent. That means we'll be able to bring a good bit of the equipment.

Oh and I had a look and I actually have 4 2-Way radios that we can use, which is perfect if we're splitting into 4 teams.

And I find the price of €45 to be perfectly reasonable... as I'm not such a big fan of manual labor.. ha.

But 1 hour of manual labour is nothing to be scared of!! It will fly, we'll be having a bot of craic too and getting to know each other. There are much scarier things within the castle walls (and without)!!!

Kennett, I would do a few hours of manual labor over paying forty quid any day.

Argue him as low as possible and we can do a bit of work :)

I totally agree... I've had to put in many more hours of labour at the castle to be honest.
It will fly, we'll be having a bot of craic too and getting to know each other.

It'll also teach us all to work together as a team, as well as learning about the castle grounds and stuff.

Woohoo, my flight is booked! On the plus side, Ryanair did me a really cheap (1p) flight, though you still get stiffed with £15 worth of taxes. It's also cheaper to take Aer Lingus back as well as a train ticket back home for what Ryainair was charging. I'm still saving something like 60 Euro for the plane/tube ticket compared to what Ryanair charged for a flight at the same time. I pity the person who has to take Ryanair back. :(
