Best Index to Buy & Hold

I'm looking to buy into some exchange traded funds that just track and index and I am wondering what would people recommend as the best index to buy and hold? I was thinking of the STOXX Euro 50 or one of the FTSE Eurofirst Indexes. I won't be selling for at least 4 years, probably longer, and the money is not vital to my future (but nice to have!) so I'm able to bear the brunt of the market forces. I'm not so interested in American indexes (like the S&P 500) at the moment because I don't want to take the currency risk of the dollar with my first holding. Although I wouldn’t mind some exposure to Japan or Asia I think I want to focus on European companies. Also is it best to buy just one fund or split my investment into two different funds (any more and fees are too much to be worth it)? Any advice is greatly appreciated.
