Hi i dont know if this is the right place but the web hosting forum is down....

Here's my problem. A few months ago i got a present of a .com address which was forwarded to my .cjb.net free website... recently i bought webspace off godaddy to go with the .com address now i can't upload my website... i know the deal with ftp and have tried using dreamweaver and various FTP programs but nothing works... i have emailed them and they said that the .com domain needs to be "unlocked" so it doesnt point to my .cjb.net site anymore... This has been done and it still wont work...

Has anyone here had any experience with godaddy.com? I was trying to find out information on the net and i have since learned that godaddy is brilliant for domain registration but crap for anything else...

I was really expecting to get an address like www.godaddy.com/"username" and then i could upload to that address and redirect the .com to it later.. because as it stands i'm not exactly uploading to anywhere but a domain name... which doesnt make sense..

this probably sounds confusing but i cant figure it out..

    Any help much appreciated...

GoDaddy sucks the sweat off a dead man's balls. And unfortunately no-one here can debug your problem without knowing at the very least your domain name.

Odd, Internic lists different nameservers to GoDaddy. And is "Jomax" part of GoDaddy?

Anyway, it looks like the domain is indeed with GoDaddy, however you're still on their parking system. I'd guess they've sent you instruction but you missed something, or didn't understand something. Post them, making sure you remove any passwords.

for what it's worth, I've always found godaddy excellent for domain registration. everything accessible via a control panel - never any need to call anyone.

never used them for hosting. seems to me that their speciality is domain reg, and everything after that is an extra, so I do my hosting elsewhere - with a hosting specialist.

I bet your problem is easily solved though. I suggest following the previous posters idea of posting your setup instructions minus passwords, or call them again - you could have got a bad support rep first time.

They must have sent you access / setup details when you registered the domain and ordered the hosting. And it should be obvious that m_stan meant to contact them in some form, not just by telephone. Use the noggin man.

when you sign up for domains you get an email full of instructions. you would have got the same for hosting.

if the call is too expensive, you don't want to get this sorted enough.

Try the following GoDaddy links (all available on their website):

    Email Support
    Hosting FAQ
    User Guides

Seems to me that if you want this fixed, you may want to consider helping yourself a bit more. You may want to bite the bullet on the expensive phonecall and just make it. A tip would be to call them at around 1pm in the afternoon, since this is early in the US on the East Coast - before their lines get busy with US callers.

    Good luck with it

If you're the trusting sort, PM me your password and I can take a look for you. I've used GoDaddy quite a bit. Check my post history for my reputation.

    If you're not...

Is the domain and hosting purchased under the same account?
If it is you need to unlock your domain (if it is locked, it'll have a lock symbol to the right of your domain in the domain list). To do this, select the domain's checkbox, click Set Locking, Choose the Unlocked radio button, and click Save Changes.. wait a minute or two for changes to take effect.

Then, back to your domain list, select your domain again, and then Set Nameservers. You'll see 3 options "Default hosting...", "Default parking.." and "Custom.." .. you want to choose "Default Hosting..." option, and save changes. You'd be advised to lock the domain after you again.

Once that's done, you'll need to wait around 24 hours (and maybe up to 48, depending on your ISP and other factors) for the change to take effect. After that you should any changes you uploaded by FTP on your domain, http://www.silver-trail.com/

Am guys... trust me do want to get this fixed... look im a student with no job i cant afford credit to be ringing the states... and dahamsta contacting them in some form is a joke i send and email on monday get a reply on tuesday, send another i get a reply wednesday it takes ages....

And yes they sent me out the intructions but it's bullsh1t..

i emailed them yesterday telling them my situation that i get an error saying "Cannot connect to host" and they send me out a very detailed email on how to enter my username and password as if it was down to a simple typo... that was it they assumed that would fix it...

And to CGarvey yes the domain is under a different account but the guy that owns it was here with me yesterday and the 2 of us spent 2 hours trying to figure it out....
Yes i did all that stuff about unlocking etc... and it has been maybe 36 hours since but i still cant see it working...

I have tried all the FAQ's and tried 4 different ways of uploading... Trust me i'm not missing something....

cgarvey - i'll wait for the 48 hours to be fully up (just to be sure) and then i'll PM the password... thanks alot....

So why on earth did you order hosting from a company in the US?

If you can't afford to call them and their technical support is slow to respond you would have been better off hosting locally.

If they're on different accounts, are you sure you can do what you want to do? I.e. do they allow you to buy hosting for a domain that you don't own? I don't know, I'm just checking that you're sure you can!

Its obvious why he picked hosting in the US - because they are apparantly "cheaper" then Irish hosts

This all boils down to the arguement over price vs support, reliability, etc

Hopefully this will start a trend where people realise for piece of mind, they should pick a physical host near where they live

for me, hosting in the US has always worked fine. Sure, you need to put the odd call in and you can only do this later in the day, but aside from that it works just great for me.

Pick a good reliable host and it shouldn't matter that much where they are.

I use Lunarpages.com and find them excellent
