Eircom speeds see-sawing?

My download speed on Eircom's standard broadband package is flitting from 1024kbps down to 512kbps (2/3 days ago) and back up (yesterday) and back down today. Does anybody know what the story is?

It's RADSL, i.e. rate adaptive, you could be on the threshold of the signal limit...or they could be doing work
