wow, did i miss alot cause i went home for the weekend...

    Okay, first off, xavier:

I was getting worked up before cause we made a huge hum-haw last year about hosting free societiy pages. Personal accounts need to be paid for, society sites are hosted free. If you like, we would set up a CMS for ye, and/or a forum. You would have complete control of your sites content. You said something about issues of "trust"? yes, myself and another will have root accounts on the box... all i can do is assure you that i won't mess with content and/or private sections of the site.. up to what is neccessary to keep it running smoothly for you.

Moving along from this, if you don't want the free internal space/hosting that's okay i guess.. i only hope you're not doing it due to any personal attitude you may have towards me or bitbucket. also, you mentioned not wanting to join netsoc cause of "CV building"? buddy the absolute majority of stuff that's done is irc... chat chat chat chat. we offer other things cause some of the members are actually interested in learning stuff. And a "X:" drive for more space and the ability to access your G: and H: drives from outside college is a usefull service to anyone.

Also, if you read back i started this thread cause i wanted to know if compsoc was going to be expanding slightly into other areas... i joined compsoc when ivan was sitting at the clubs and socs day desk all those years ago. i asked him what it's about. he said "computers... we could show you how to build one, we could offer assitance and help.. sure whatever you want" now you said numerous times that it's "games" and nout more.. mayhaps a name change would be in order hmmm?

I agree with a change of names, but I doubt we would be "oficially" let run a gameing society. I did say a while back that I would help anyone, that interested, build a computer or at least explain to them how it is done. I have no problem with that, the point that I am trying to argue is that we focus more on gaming. I know compsoc started off (About 5 years ago???) as a proper computer society, but that changed? I wounder why... I don't think that a change of names is essential.

As for the site, I would rather scrap it now as it has caused so much unwanted trouble. I was never offered help from you before s4dd, hence why we built the site ourselves. The input we are getting is mainly about the site which doesn't hold alot of importance as of yet. I was in want of input which would directly affect compsoc and it's running. People seem to rather put the society down. :( I have no grudge against you or bitbucket, I don't want your space as I have no need for it. It would only be wasted, but hey, if I happen to need it at a later date i'll ask the tech dept to extend it... ;) Oh, s4dd, what's a CMS?

I would like to hear peoples opinions on, what nights would suit best? Would you like to see some kind of compititions? What would your opinion be on playing against other colleges? Just some of the things that I would rather see discussed...

Can we please move away form the topic of "what is compsoc"? As it has been the same thing for thelast 3 years and I don't intend on changing it, I would get but a handfull of new members and lose many of our current members.

    CMS == Content Managment System.

Last year we were stuck with Tuesday and Thursday nights.. for use of lab 307. Personally, i'd prefare wedensday over thursday as it's kinda the "night out" day.

Other colleges are waiting to play ye... contacts over intersocs. i believe steve might have suggesting something along those lines with some of them before? DCU perhaps?

    -edit-
nobody was trying to put the society down. well, i wasn't at least. i see a place for it. trying to bring about some change won't necessarily lose you members though..

    also,
I was never offered help from you before s4dd

i'm offering now.. you want it, you got it.

ok, it looks like we will probably need to use the netsoc space, if its ok with s4dd, as all .tk sites are blocked by the college firewall. it would also be very useful to, as steven suggested, to be able to just type compsoc into the browsers, and be brought to the site. and i dont think there'd be an issue of having netsoc as root admins, as they are a trustable bunch...and if your not, well, lets just say your not gonna be able to sit well for a while after it :D

ok, personally i prefer the fact that compsoc is purely about games now, since after having (but not going) to 8hrs of computer classes a day, i quite enjoy it the way it is.

saying that, i'd definalty be interested in doing a mod for a game like HL2/BF2/Farcry. i've dabbled in modding in the past, but i know more about networking then modding (which really isnt much). but i'd still enjoy trying one, so let me know if anyone else is interested.

as for an online poker game, after doing something like that in programming last year, i'd pass on that, but i wouldnt have a problem with anyone else doing it.

games wise, i enjoy css alot, but a bit of variety would be nice. we are gonna try get a few games, like warcraft 3, call of duty....and others, which my tiny mind cant think of right now. if you wanna suggest a game to play, let us know and we'll test it on the computers, or try it yourself, and we'll give it a go if it works.

as for the techies, as steven again suggested, i'll ask them for a projector for the compsoc stand this year, since it would be useful for getting new members. also, what do you all think about getting personalised accounts? rather then having just the generic logon? i know this would be a problem for people who just wanna play every now and again, but it would (hopefully) increase the official members, and a €2 a head, we could probably get and extra joypad or 7 for the x-box/ps2/360, and get some decent multiplayer games going.

now my tiny mind is sore from all this writing, so i shall go now.

he wants it, it will help tie compsoc/netsoc relations

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,219 ✭✭✭Redrocket

personalised accounts, would hopefully cut down on the bull**** that went on with on with the generic compsoc account ( ie people messing on the generic account )

Cool, so can I take a look at a site s4dd? I would like to transfer the data I have on it now to the new site. Just a bit of copy paste. Could you take a look at the current site and use the same headings, or if you have a better suggestion, be my guest. :)

The Projector is a possability, but again must be discussed with the techies. Would the barrow centre proove too light for it to work proparly? I hope not... Well this year carlow has had the most students EVER enlisted, over 1000. Correct me if i'm wrong, but i'm sure there will be plenty of hardcore gamers in there that will fill up our society no problem. ;)

I don't think Warcraft III will work as it is an RTS... I think Call of Duty has been tried before without any luck, but hey we can try again... Anyone has any games that they want to try then pass them on to us, we will put them onto DVD's and try them out on the pc's...

There was something mentioned about playing other colleges, I was talking to steve the other day and this proved too difficult. Certain ports had to be opened by the techies but I don't think they would do it. The other option is traveling, we will be supplied with a free bus and is very doable, but will we have the interest to travel to another college? It would also be alot easier to do in person, less confusion and all that.

We could work something out on the wednesday night issue, as we both want it. Do you have full attendance? Like 20+ members? At the start it may be hard but we could share the room on a wednesday night? Half and half? It's just an Idea but i'm sure we could work aomething out s4dd... Would the other rooms not facilitate ye? Like 310, they have pretty decent computers.

Again, thanks everyone for the suggestions it's much appreciated.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,219 ✭✭✭Redrocket

i think to get another room would be more appropriate
would alternate nights not be a better idea?
members who are both in compsoc and netsoc would have decide over which to do....

it seems that all we can do at the moment is talk and argue and try to arrange things,
i think there has been enough talk to get the society back up and running, over the next few weeks is when the tweaking of things should take place, like nights to run, games to play, things to do, website, etc

okay, a face to face meeting would be in order i guess... our first committee meeting is going to be this evening.

you compsoceres round up your gang and head to the third floor of the lrc at about 5.30? we'll be over by the windows we could have a chat then... if that's not suitable, you pick a time.

im sure some of the lads could be there at 5:30pm, but myself and xavier are working at six, so its not the best time for it. but then again, you can talk stuff over, then steven/monk/balkie can fill us in later.

some of us are meeting in 45mins (4:00pm) on the third floor, just to chat about a few things, so if your free, we can talk then.

    edit

but we can have a meeting at some stage tomorrow. most of us are free after college tomorrow, so do you wanna meet then??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 333 ✭✭s4dd

yeah, had a brief talk with balkie.. can chat with ye tomorrow at 5 if ye like... myself and mermiss are meeting to do some general admin stuff on the new server.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,839 ✭✭✭balkieb2002

Yeah have class till 5 so should be around, i'll round up the rest of them too and try get this sorted out.

    Cheers

It's sorted, 5 o clock today, 3rd floor of the LRC, near the window (Where no-one will see the kilings :)) Talk then...

  • Registered Users Posts: 125 ✭✭Kentar

Hmmm..... Killings? eh... yes that might be feasible!

Wow your third post, adn all of them have a sarcastic ring to them. It realy is you Kentar... :)

So we met up, and sorted a few things out. What we talked about? I don't have a clue, you have to ask balkie that... :) J/K On a serious note, we have discussed a few topics with the netsoc guys, a new addfree forums for us gamers to discuss various topics. Cheers s4dd :)

A meeting with the techies has been arranged tomorrow. Keep you updated soon. Hope to have some good news tomorrow. :)

now, that wasnt so hard, was it? :)

I really am glad ye could come to that kind of arangement, netsoc is a great resource to have while compsoc is a great place to relax.

With that in mind, I'd like to publicly apologise to Iamxavier for suggesting he might have taken over compsoc without the peoples consent, I obviously didnt have all the facts and jumped to conclusions.

On that note, stevenk did take over without anyones permisson, but I guess in the end he did a better job than I ever did, and he'll be the first to say so :P

Though I dont quite see how starcraft destroys compsoc, purely because its a game some people dont like or cant get into. It definitely kept at least 16 members of compsoc entertained for a full year and in fairness at the time, 16 members was 2/3's of the society :D

With that in mind, we also managed to get Warcraft III working, I still have a copy of the version that will work there but I dont think it would work out too well. The game itself, while quite enjoyable, is damn difficult for newbies to pick up and play and I dont think it would go down too well...

Operation flashpoint should be around some place too, Battlefield 1942 and a copy of the new unreal tournament should be in my possesion also. If/when I come up to carlow at some point, I'll try wing a copy of these games to ye, though purely in a non-illegal way.

And with that, I really am glad that you guys can work together instead of fighting each other on this, ye'll all be alot better off for it.

Oh, and I've said it before and I'll say it again, compsoc is just for games but as soon as you admit otherwise, bad things happen :o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 333 ✭✭s4dd

i hope ivan will be given an open invitation to compsoc evenings so he can school you all in the ways of the RTS.. also, i _still_ owe him a DoW asskicking....

    ...oh yes, i went there

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,560 ✭✭✭Ivan

You forgot to mention school them in CS, AGAIN! haha, I made a funny. But seriously, all who oppose me will die horribly :p

P.s. its too late s3dd, yes, I went there :p I've given up on DoW, the game just isnt balanced, of course that wont stop me from raping you up and down the place, and not just in a sexual way, either ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 333 ✭✭s4dd

well i guess i'm going to have to use my uber "IPX" skills and show the compsocers how to set up Red Alert2 then... my RTS-foo is strong with that one.

also, it's only deemed "rape" when it's non-consentual...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,221 ✭✭✭✭m5ex9oqjawdg2i

RTS's wont be played. It's impossible to run compsoc with those type of games. It simply won't happen. Last year we had 30-40 people playing some nights. The year before some people had to wait for a computer to be free. I love RTS's but it simply wont be fair on anyone, those games can go for hours... People will get bored if they have to wait to get in.

BF 1942 is ok. The weapons are way off and seriously unbalanced. I would like to see it work and will give it a try. (Have a copy of that one ;))

Operation flashpoint is another one of those brilliant games that more than likely won't work. It takes alot of patients, but again we will give it a shot. (Hav that too)

Thanks for the offers Ivan, but we have the games you have listed already. :)

I think we are going to get alot of new members this year but I would also like to see some of the old members back. ;)

    2 rooms of carnage?! :D

i saw operation flashpoint working at some stage last year, ive never played it but am looking forward to!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 333 ✭✭s4dd

the whole third floor of the LRC?!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,221 ✭✭✭✭m5ex9oqjawdg2i

That's an idea... :) Well the graphic cards are so much better than in 307. Well the only problem is there's no sound for some reason, it would be good if we could switch the computers and download the sound drivers, but that ain't going to happen. :( Ah well...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,839 ✭✭✭balkieb2002

I was checking in 307 yesterday and saw the drivers were released in 2003 on those pcs, its possible if they were upgraded to get some of the later end games working at lower details such as serious sam 2 co-op etc..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,221 ✭✭✭✭m5ex9oqjawdg2i

Ok, we have a forums sorted thanks to s4dd. Take a look if ye dare. Still needs a few tweeks and the like.

bump for the sake of it!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,953 ✭✭✭blu_sonic

what do y'all do at compsoc?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,221 ✭✭✭✭m5ex9oqjawdg2i

have LAN parties mainly. Actually at the moment that's all we do. We play Call of Duty, Counterstrike Source and doom 3 mainly, but we are working on a few other games. Its great craic and we always get around 40 people up on a night...

We had about 60+ at the start which was mental, had to use 2 rooms. :-)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,953 ✭✭✭blu_sonic

so it could be called "gamesoc"?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 333 ✭✭s4dd

could/should... really it should... for certain it should. all the other colleges have their "gamesocs" after all.. you'd possibly get more members if you DID call it gamesoc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,953 ✭✭✭blu_sonic

i'd have joined, i thought it was an elite comp soc type thing

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 333 ✭✭s4dd

    yes.. so rename already

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,953 ✭✭✭blu_sonic

we should hand an official partition to them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 333 ✭✭s4dd

    do you mean "petition"?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,953 ✭✭✭blu_sonic

yep i did i was just thing about that when i saw a new poster on the thread

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 333 ✭✭s4dd

yes.. enough of these spam posts now.... chripes, you should have joined netsoc so you could just come on irc and chat.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,953 ✭✭✭blu_sonic

i'm knocking about in the cookoos nest too long, but this is the most action that the board has seen in days

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 333 ✭✭s4dd

this is because everyone is either talking on irc on netsoc or on the new forums that compsoc have (had) set up..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,221 ✭✭✭✭m5ex9oqjawdg2i

Unhappy paul... very unhappy... The guy only joined us and you try to take him away... tut tut. :)

Seriously though, there is a reason why we are not called "gamesoc", I thought you knew why s4dd... anyway it's all politics which isn't interesting... meh, cheerio auld chaps.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 333 ✭✭s4dd

i'm not taking anyone away! you can join both socs you know....

and name one bit of the "Politics" involved that can't be changed like *snaps fingers* that

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,221 ✭✭✭✭m5ex9oqjawdg2i

The whole "no game to be played on the computers" We shouldn't be officially be viewed as a gaming society, things get a little messy. ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 333 ✭✭s4dd

yeah, no dice.. considering you set yourself on public forums and on clubs and socs day telling everyone "WE ONLY PLAY GAMES" that excuse isn't going to fly any more... do you have another reason? is that the only one? cause i bet you five minutes with the admins and i can sort you out politically with the use of the name "gamesoc"

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 23,220 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kiith

we could/should/would but we probably wont, since we are all a bunch of lazy ****ers. its not that big a deal anyway. if you joined up on clubs soc day, you could see it was a games society, rather then a computer society.

but we'll have a vote on the forums (compsoc forums) if people want one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 333 ✭✭s4dd

at a certain point it isn't just about ye.... for the greater good the name should be changed.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,221 ✭✭✭✭m5ex9oqjawdg2i

Paul the only reason I see why we should change the name is because you want to change from netsoc to compsoc...?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,839 ✭✭✭balkieb2002

Thats true but he been building netsoc over the past 2 years so he would hardly wanna destroy his own creation... or would he:D

As for name change doesnt really bother me as either way we have members for this year so if any changes happen it will be towards the latter end of the year or preperations for next year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 333 ✭✭s4dd

xavier, you have been nothing but flippant, dismissive and rude in this matter.. so guess what? do whatever the hell you want to do.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,221 ✭✭✭✭m5ex9oqjawdg2i

Can't we all just get along??? :(

"that is a load of BS... it should change.. and if ye want it to, it will change."

I recall you starting the rudness s4dd... Now lets bicker like little kids over the most irrelivant subject ever. As you admit to not wanting the name, why all the defence and upstedness???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 333 ✭✭s4dd

my reference to "BS" was in reference to a case where the only thing that was holding you back was the fact that you might not be allowed... which wasn't in question, and as apposed to meaning offence, was ment to encourage.

the only defence you have seen from me is slight disgust over your handling of the matter considering you supposed "offical" position. now have the last word and lets leave it at this okay?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,953 ✭✭✭blu_sonic

ah snowball effect, just thinking about it, if its called gamesoc it would have the potential to be overrun by pro evo wasters, at least the netsoc guise is a nice filter, thoughts?
