I've been waiting for Smart to go live in Naas for ages now, But I see on the metro website that Naas is listed as a pre launch location? Maybe Smart will loose my custom.
The person in the call center didn't really know when Naas would go live?
Does anyone here have any idea.
    Cheers B2
    P.S. I hate Eircom

Smart won't be in Naas before year end.

Thats a big shame, you offer a great service. The smart site initially said end of july / august, but now says before end of year. And then you bring more bad news!

    Oh well

it's on the info details page here: http://www.digiweb.ie/broadband_metro_services.asp?i=80&i2=81&i6=91&zzz=bm

    (3mb) = 40:1
    (4mb) = 20:1
    (6mb) = 10:1

    Isn't 40:1 a bit high? I saw 17:1 somewhere else.

    Hi Garfield :)

Naas - currently looking for a site, all equipment etc in stock. Naas is next after the cities.

Can's say exactly when but I would think October is about right. Chaz?

You guys really should think about putting a mast on Naul hill in Meath.
From there you would cover all of North Dublin, and half of Meath including Ashbourne, Blanch, Swords and Balbriggan.

I think Clearwire are in Naas too.

Digiweb folks, any plans for Bray?

I am right in saying they will NOT allow you download any porn or illegal music and movies?eh what the hell use then is a huge D/L speed? Who wants to pay for movies to download?

P.S. Don't get mad its just MY opinion

To paraphrase the quote from Digiweb:

"It's naughty to download porn and pirated movies or tunes and if you get a knock on the door from the vice squad or IRMA it's nothing to do with us".

I'm guessing all ISPs say similar worldwide.

Im not totally sure about it...but isnt "Playboy" the only legal (soft)porn in all of Ireland???
So anything "harder" is technically illegal and downloading it could put you in a lot of trouble....or is that law only applied to printed material?

its their get outa jail terms.

also i just happened to notice them saying in the comparison area that eircoms 29.99 price for 1mb is going up to 39.99 from the 1/03/06?

nope. if you have a look in one of the bigger centra stores, all those top shelf magazines that have plastic covers on them are hardcore porn mags, so unless they are blatantly breaking the law, I reckon not.

It is actually something to do with them,

    - You download illegal software
    - BSA tracks the download from logs and finds your IP
    - BSA contacts your ISP to get your contact details[/b[
Now depending on the backbone of your ISP they will either release your details or deny the request and the BSA may bring them to court
    - BSA gets details and knocks on your door

As you can plainly see, in order to find out where you live IMRO, RIAA, MPAA, BSA need to cxontact your ISP....eg: digiweb
So after you agree to the T&C you may not be able to sue them for releasing details it does involve them :)

But wouldn't [insert name of copyright enforcing company here] have to prove to Digiweb that you were doing something illegal before Digiweb could release your details to them?

Dude - you can paste the link in the url box but call it something else alot lot smaller!!

Going back to digiwebs stance on illegal downloads - a mate, (he's on boards - maybe he'll make himself known) was using a well known torrent client to download a well known movie and didgiweb cut him off til he called them, they then told him why they cut him off and told him not to do it again. An oul slap on the wrist was all it was. THey don;t really give a **** - to busy trying to kick eircoms ass.

i'd be a little worried about this if it's true. An ISP monitoring it's users downloads? and torrents as well. i can only imagine the astronomical resources it would take to track that amount of data for all their users, never mind doing something about it.

but if it is true, then where does it stop? will they be reading our email and chat sessions? looking through our provate family photo's and censoring them?

watchign our banking transactions to make sure we're not using offshore accounts?

seriously, is it even legal for an ISP to track a users activity like that, even if they 'might' be doing something illegal?

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 18,115 ✭✭✭✭ShiverinEskimo

Nope - its easily done with torrents becase by their nature you have to advertise your download as an upload for other torrent users for it to work better - basically, its very easy to see what you're downloading because you're advertiseing it to anyone who wants it.

To look at what pages you're surfing means looking at traffic through port 80 - which will be packed out with standard issue net traffic and no company in their right mind will pay some dude to trawl through that gack.

I severely doubt digiweb and co. 1. Can and 2. Could be arsed going to look what jimmy might be saying to bob in chatroom X...

Although I stand to be corrected...on all of the above....Chaz??

Just put in my order for the 3mps line. All excited now..this coupled with my new pc i'm buying in the next 4 weeks (For those interested) should make for a potent combination. :D

So it seems Smart (IIRC) and NTL are the kings of ping (AKA best for gaming)!

I'm so close to signing up,

just a question or two on the speeds....

Is the 3Mbps max burst rate, or substained data rate?

i.e. with my DSL link I pretty much get most of my 1Mbps even though the contention ratio is 48:1...

What is it likely to be with Metro?

Can I expect my 3Mbps for most of the day - or just 700kbps iwht the 40:1 contention?

Those pings aren't exactly impressive at all :/
Sure, they're not BAD, but they're nothing to shout the roof down about either...

I just gave Digiweb a ring to see if my area is covered yet,

Sandycove area dublin hopefully in phase 2 i was told, have you anymore info on this chaz?

Just though it might be of interest to some, I see latency queries all the time :D

    very true :)

Either way, I'll be looking for a new BB provider very soon, and the 3down/512up as advertised by Metro certainly has me interested.

The only thing that will keep me from going to them (depending on reliability of them of course) is if I can get NTL or not.

ZeRoY: what are you overall opinions on them? How long have you had the package? How often is it down? Is there bottleneck at any time during the day? And how fast do they respond to queries regarding the QoS? (low pings is essential for me)

Zoro, I am on the beta program (live at present) Metro in Dundalk for about a month now. Don't recall of an outage outside planned tests. Pings are very reliable (providing you are not maxing your upload ;) ) and gaming is a real pleasure on this connection. As for the bottleneck, I did'nt notice any althought I mostly connect on the evenings...

Interesting - thanks for the reply. Do you know anyone else on the service that could comment aswell? Even if it were you asking them and then posting up their reply? :)

The pings, as I said, aren't anything to run naked down the street screaming "<flat dub accent>AYE LUV DA METRRRROOO!!!!</flat dub accent>" but they aren't bad either. Out of interest, could you give me some ping times to:

    www.unreal.ie
    games1.unreal.ie
    games2.unreal.ie

    please?
I've found that pinging boards.ie and jolt doesnt give the full picture, and that pings to boards can sometimes be erratic. Jolt, being in england, gives a nice idea of what gaming on non-irish servers are like, but the 2 unreal.ie (ut2004) games servers are extremely popular, so it'd be nice to have some information for that.
