I tried using XP's movie maker to join two large avi files (700 mb each, same bitrate, resolution etc) but it killed movie maker. What else can i use to do this?

Yup, Virtual Dub is what ya need. Very easy to join two clips but of course, it'll be a 1.4gig file.

Very easy with Virtual Dub, just beware of not losing the audio sync between file 1 and file 2 - if it happens, plenty of FAQs about, just Google it.

Depending on your hardware, you may just want to test the join first without fiddling too much with the audio setting:

    (i) open your file 1 in vdub
(ii) click file menu > append
(iii) select file 2 in the filesystem pop-up box & OK-it
(iv) click file menu > save as

Bob's your uncle... so he says :D

It's saving the video uncompressed. Goto "Video" and set it to Direct Stream Copy and save again.

    That did the trick!

    Cheers All!
