Ok last years the societies that i Joined were:
Philsoc :) , which turned out to be the best of all and it'll be even better next year if what i here is true, join early and get a cool t shirt(maybe).

Dramsoc  I personally had a bad experience with this society, it appeared to me to be very closed shop. its the firm belief of many people that they only hold the auditions for the sake of saving face, most roles going to a select clique. this is simply the opinion of people who i know who have had contact with Dramsoc

Sci-Fi Society:  This was also very closed shop, however i didnt really give them a chance, I heard their Ice Skatting trip was really good, but their coffee lunches were closed shop. Which i thought was crap coz im a sci-fi head and these people disappointed me by being very unwelcoming.

Filmsoc:  i found filmsoc to be pretty crap. to be honest. they only showed a couple of movies and didnt really do anything last year. ive also heard that they're very clique-ish when it comes to wanting to use their equipment, being a member and taking part in events isnt enough u have to be pals with the commitee. This actually led to talk amongst some students last year to form an Anti-Filmsoc Soc, or Movie Soc, simply because they felt Filmsoc werent doing their job.

Pokersoc :D : This was good, everyweek, mondays, same format with the odd move to the Radison for big games, they even had classes for beginners. The guys who ran it were also quite sound and friendly which is a big plus.

I think thats enough i'll get back when i've joined some, im thinking Philsoc, Scifi(Deserve another chance) and Filmsoc if they get there act together. maybe some others. i'll see...

Last thing i swear, one of the best things you can do this year is get involved in Belfield FM. its really good and a lot of fun. they'll be broadcasting during freshers week just look em up or go to www.belfieldfm.ie

thats it... boardies start ur posting!!!

I've just been looking through some of the societies and clubs on the website, and these are the ones I'm thinking of joining(@ €2 a pop, maybe I should reconsider!)...

    Societies:
    Computer Science soc
    Games soc
    Law soc
    Netsoc
    An Cumann Gaelach
    L&H
    Photographic Soc
    Psychology soc
    Pokersoc

    Clubs:
    Archery
    Boxing
    Equestrian
    Fencing
    Mountaineering
    Olympic Handball
    Rifle
    Table Tennis
    Volleyball
    Lacrosse
    Snowsports

    That's alot, methinks! :D

if u join that many u'll never make it to half the events!

Anyway one you can strike off your list is comp soc. Pretty much non existant these days. Check their website: http://www.ucd.ie/compsoc/

last update? some time in 2000!

Netsoc is a bit hit and miss. I was a member back in its early years. Back when the only way to get email/internet was to have a netsoc account. Of which there was only a few hundred. So you had to queue at 5 or 6am to get one!

Now UCD internet is available to all and is as fast as anything Netsoc can provide. So i gave up my account last year. They try and run an Admin course every year to train new people in running the servers. Never really works and the people who take over the running tend to know all the stuff in the first place. Some of their talks can be interesting though.

Anyway thats my take on the nerdy socs anyway.

Hurling: Well number one might I begin by saying that isn't it funny that the year I arrive on the scene in a blaze of rockets and glory, UCD win the Fitz Cup... Coincidence... I think not! You don't even have to be intercounty esp if youre from somewhere like Kilkenny or Tipp, Anyways its a great thing to get involved in sound lads and always up for going out. Ill tell you a secret nobody is from D4 "hurrah"

    Hockey (Mens):
Following in the proud tradition of my ma and my sister I pulled on my dress and joined hockey. No seriously there really is mens hockey I think theyre fairly ****e tho cos I went to a few evenings and it was ****e they were all rather "Oh Fiachra pass pass plllease" and then lost it and cried. Also I was really sh1t at it.

    Table Tennis:
I joined this cos they pestered me and found out theyre actually sound, some of them take it too seriously tho, and really resent people who play big tennis! Felt like it was was them or us and in the end I opted for

Tennis: Sound sound sound as a pound. Good looking girls thats all Im saying. I dont think Im a member anymore just play individually betwixt lectures

ELS: English Lit Soc. Well Ive been harbouring my child poet for manys the year and I felt it was about time I let him loose on the world. He's currently in prison for offences against the english language. A great soc though

Newman Soc - I joined these but I dont know what to do some randomer tried explaining to me but I gave him my yoyos and he stopped talking so closesly at my face, good tactic though no?

Medsoc - I dont know why! some of those dudes should be selling cars I was convinced that I NEEDED to be in this club then never had anything to do with it again

    Other good stuff: Rowing, Swimming
Bad bad Stuff it is the devil: Anything vaguely related to a martial art. BO-RING bring on the beers!

DaveMcG to be honest, dont join L+H u dont really get anything out of it and you can go to all their debates and dont need to be a member, unless u like debating. TBH most of the big socs, C&E, L+H, B&L, LawSoc, do the whole big flashy, give away pizza thing during freshers week to get their members numbers into the 1000s, i think Lawsoc with thanks to Dominos Pizza got like 5/6000 members. the reason for this is they get a huge pile of money off the university which they then spend on themselves. ur better off giving ur money to something worth while.

They're only any good if ur a blonde, (fake)tanned, cloned, shaved monkey... which im not... so ive no interest.

I wouldn't mind joining a 5-a side league or something similar if they are available. Or can I join a club but not actually do anything with them for a couple of months? I'm currently crippled and I won't be able to do things that non-cripples can do untill I...er..de cripple.

When do we start signing up for socs? Is it some time next week? I need to get me some free stuff! ;)

Last year I joined loads of clubs and socs but I never stuck with them. This year I intend to join:

    Clubs:

    Table Tennis
    Pool & Snooker
    Wrestling
BJJ (people in BJJ are sound)

    Societies:

    LawSoc
    An Cumann Gaelach
    L&H society

    And of course...PatSoc. :D

I'd also be interested in writing for the Tribune or the Observer. Do they allow newbies to write for them?

Cant remember if there was a 5 a side club, coming up to around Christmas they have a five a side tournament that everyone can enter, Its on a saturday and alls I remember is being ****ed for my Christmas exams but goin up to spend the day playing 5 a siding

Better of getting a few lads together and renting the astroturf for a game not too expensive either

Clubs? Taekwon-Do :) The one and only.

Societies? The usual array of nerd societies. Sci-fi, GameSoc, Netsoc, MathSoc, and a few other random ones. I know Pagansoc was in there somewhere too. A lot of the ones I joined last year were because my friends were involved in running them.

    Pool & Snooker
    Wrestling

Can you tell me how much you liked these?

These two are the ones I'd be particularly interested in. :)

Computer science society died a while back, but it has been revived recently. I know the auditor. Who knows how it'll turn out.

Eeeesh, I can't believe you included Young Fine Gael and the KBC in the societies list but not Labour Youth :(

And what about the Young PDs? They will be very upset, and by "they" I mean all three of them. ;)

    LoL, brilliant...

I'm staggered that a Socialist such as HappyCrackHead forgot to mention ANY of the many Student Socialist Societies eg Socialist Workers' Student Society, Socialist Party, Socialist Alternative, Socialist Youth etc.
Shame on you, you fruit loop. :p

What are Games Soc and Sci-Fi soc like, RK? These are the two that I was most considering joining. *nerd*

Games Soc has always been a misleading title.
In first year I found to my great and everlasting disappointment that there is no Computer Gaming soc, and this has yet to be remedied. Anyway, Games Soc is, I think, based around those i-roll-twenties-esque kinda games. Dungeons & Dragons, that kinda sh*t. Seriously NOT my cuppa tea. But I could be wrong, my memory's abysmal.

how does one go about founding a soc? i suppose you have to be sophomore or higher and persuade some suits at the top, but it can't be that hard to get a few quid allocated when there's trampoline and jugglings socs, can it?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 611 ✭✭✭Alana

Wait a darn didly minute here ppl...why are people talking about joining societies, is the freshers tent up yet? What's going on HappyCrackHead????

Well I'm just hoping to do a bungee jump this year, tried to do one last year but they wouldn't let me unless I bought a phone....eh ok so...

As for socs I hope (probably again in vain) that the Art soc, will get off the ground this year and do stuff, and then it looks like juggling soc, film soc, as well as the nerdy uni subject socs. As for sport, I'd love if we had a pool on campus, but...it's ucd...

I didn't join either of these last year. They were two of the few I managed to overlook. I don't even remember seeing the pool and snooker club there last year. As for wrestling, if you wish to get heavily involved in the martial arts stuff, you are advised to do wrestling. I've heard alot of people do boxing, wrestling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as this covers all areas. Wrestling takes place on Mondays and Fridays as far as I know and I've heard it's very physically demanding. I might join just to shed off this summer weight. :D

Yes, I'd like to know when the tent is up myself!

Bungee jump? Are you crazy?! I got scared just watching those loons!

I'm just getting a feel for it. Games Soc is a big let down, and its a table top gaming community. I agree with SebTheBum, there is a serious need for a computergaming society. We could do it in the astra hall or something it'd be really really cool.

No the freshers tent doesnt go up till the week beginning the ninteenth, but i dont really care. Societies are an interesting subject.

Also, i apologise for not mentioning the political parties, the list i provided was copied and pasted im afraid. the following political parties have hitleryouth style movements in ucd (thats a joke for those of you without senses of humour, however it is laced with some truth):

    Labour Youth,
    Socialist Workers Party,
    Socialist Party,
Fianna Fail (under the guise of the Kevin Barry Cummann, who if my history serves me correctly was dead before Fianna Fail existed, revisionist ****wads),
Ogra Sinn Fein(do i hear the sound of jackboots?)
    Young Fine Gael...
    the UCD Greens,
Young PD's "All three of them" (dont worry about offending them, they dont use the internet, still working with the plow)

Yes... most of the GameSoc people are really into tabletop RPGing... but myself and Syth are trying to get more console gaming events organised this year. I'm currently trying to organise a console gaming event for the week after Fresher's Week... the decision is between a Super Smash Bros Melee tournament and a Halo tournament (even though I suck at Halo, it would probably get a lot of people interested).

So anyone who was thinking of joining GameSoc... post if you're interested in one or the other. :)

Ahhhh. Tabletop RPGs aren't really my thing either :( I'd be more interested if there were computer games but I'm not a console man.

Are ya allowed install games on the UCD computers?

Join Ninjutsu, its great fun and a very relaxed atmosphere :)

the expo is on from the 19th to the 23rd for all who are interested. I'll be there on the Wednesday and Thursday at the Ninjutsu stand (that will be the one with all the weapons :D ), so if anyone wants to pop up and say hi your more than welcome (I'm the blonde girl!). We'll be doing demonstrations as well, although I don't know when they are on just yet. There is also a picture of myself in the sports booklet swing a bokken (wooden sword) at my instructor, its beside the Lau Gar write up for some reason though  I hate photos, but at least its only my back!
