Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back a page or two to re-sync the thread and this will then show latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Win XP Pro services.exe using 100% of CPU

This is one is really doing my head in.

Booted up the machine, took absolutely ages to log in and is really slow.
Managed to get task manager open, found services.exe is using 100% of the cpu.

Tried logging in under the local admin account and services.exe is still at 100%. Is the same in safe mode, safe mode with command prompt. Tried a system restore but it just hung.

There has been no new software or hardware added, ran a spyware and virus scan before going home yesterday, and the machine was clean.

Googled the issue and could only find solutions relating to a virus or win2k.

A rebuild is not an option, any help much appreciated

Run another virus and syware scan with updated definitions and possibly another antivirus.
I would bet 99% virus as services.exe is not a windows process.

While a virus is a possibility, services.exe is actually a normal windows process. It handles the starting and stopping of system services. It could be having trouble starting up a particular service. You could try stopping services one by one (under Administrative Tools) and see if the CPU utilisation returns to normal.

dunno if this will help or not, maybe you have already seen it but check out http://www.neuber.com/taskmanager/process/services.exe.html

there is alot of info in there and ideas for things to check out, double check also and see if it is service.exe or services.exe
