Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Givens tries to deflect shambolic management with focus on next tournament

Givens looking forward to Under-21 switch
    07/09/2005 - 15:24:26

Republic of Ireland Under-21 manager Don Givens is already focusing on the next European Championship qualifying campaign which is to be given a facelift by UEFA.

European football’s governing body are eager to make the competition more high profile, with their first step to switch the tournament away from World Cup and senior European Championship years.

After next summer’s under-21 finals, the subsequent event will be in 2007, and then every two years beyond that, ensuring the spotlight will be firmly on this particular age group in any given year rather than the senior competitions.

Qualifying for the 2007 tournament will start in a year’s time and follow set dates on the international
calendar, but given the close proximity of the finals, the groups will probably comprise no more than three teams.

Of greater significance, though, is that unlike at present where the senior team group stage qualifying draws for the World Cup and European Championships dictate which nations the under-21s will face, it is almost certain they will now have their own draw.

The format is due to be ratified at the next Executive Committee meeting of UEFA in Rome on September 21 and 22.

The changes ensures Givens has a quick opportunity to rectify the mistakes made during the current qualifying campaign, with the latest setback a 2-1 defeat by France at Turners Cross in Cork last night.

The Republic are now winless in seven matches stretching back a year, in particular, taking just one point from their last five games in Group Four.

The French handed Ireland a lesson, showing Givens the way forward as he said: “I will now start looking ahead towards the next campaign.

“Things are changing at under-21 level and we have to prepared, particularly after being set a benchmark by France last night.

“They were physically and technically better than us. We never got on the ball enough to cause them problems, while with long balls and aerial challenges, they were coming out on top when I expected us to do that.

“They played at a level we have to be aiming for, and that is what I will be looking for with the next group of players coming through.

“We will lose a few, as you do at the end of any under-21 qualifying competition, the likes of Wayne Henderson, Paddy McCarthy, Kevin Doyle and Daryl Murphy.

“But I like to think there is a good crop coming through in Willo Flood, Joey O’Brien and Paul McShane, while there will be a few more introduced for our final two matches next month.”

Ireland will hope to end their winless streak when they next face Cyprus in Larnaca on October 7, a team they beat 3-0 last September in making a solid start to the group, but with that proving to be their last victory. http://breaking.tcm.ie/2005/09/07/story219630.html

Pity he couldnt admit he is a diaster of a manger and should be fired. Aside from him I think this is a good idea for the U21's, it will mean better focus for the U21's. Hopefully a drastic improvement can be made on technical and physical development of the players

I heard something mad in commentary last night (no, not Frank Stapleton) about the qualifying groups in future only consisting of 3 teams. Anyone have any further information on this? Seems truly bizarre to me.

"Hopefully, they are only coming home for a short while and they will eventually return to England where the standard is higher."

"The flip side is if these boys are to progress to full international level, which is what I am all about, then to be ready for that they need to be playing in a higher league."

ie. the comments about Doyle and O'Donovan, saying they would be better off in England.

In a way I'm glad Kearney didnt get on because now be fresh for Bray on Friday night in what is now "the most important game of the season", as Rico would say. :D

Im going to get one of those online petitions to get Givens out of Irish football. Maybe we can get offtheball and some other stations to advertise it.

He's right in a way, they do need to be playing at a higher level like at premiership or championship level, however no point in them playing in england for some low division team (like carlisle) because it is england.

Givens shouldnt be sacked based on these comments but on his results which are poor
