If you don't want to party any particular night, just stay away from them. You can have whatever experience you want

I am a mature student returning to college (UL). I am looking for good cheap accommodation. I will be spending 3/4 nights there.

    Thanks,

Fair paly for coming back. There is plenty of cheap accomodation about. Call to the accommodation office on campus for a list of places. You could get the list for post grads/mature students

i me and one of my friends are becoming (hopefully) U.L first years next year! we are both female and hoping for other first years to come join us in a house off campus!

Hi there. get the list of places from the accomodation office. You can ring those places to see if there are other first years in the house.

Hi, I'm a bit of a newbie to boards :)

I've applied to UL this year as 1st yr and have booked accomodation in Thomond. Unfort I'm not seeing any great write ups on it here and startin to think it's a bad choice? I've a deposit down on Thomond but do people think I should change? Obviously the likes of Plassey get great reviews so should I stick with what I have or make the move? Any advice would be great! Thanks! :D

The houses in Thomond are far nicer. It may not be as lively as Plassey but I think on campus accomodation is made up of a lot of first years so you will find craic wherever you go. If you do want a livlier spot I would recommend Kilmurry before Plassey for a nice mix, but that's just my view.

Has anyone or know anyone who has booked into Troy Student Village for the upcoming semester?? Word on the street is they are changing management and that has delayed the intake of new bookings. If anyone has any other info on the situation, please do share! PS. Both websites to do with Troy are no help what-so-ever...

    Cheers.

I'd be wary of Troy; there have been some horror stories on here about deposits and the like. I wouldn't be overly surprised to see them struggle financially either. They charge about the same as on campus afaik and at that price it's no contest - on campus everytime. Other than that; Courtyard or Groody.

If Troy have changed management then it may not be a bad option. The houses are lovely in fairness with a flat screen tv, sky sports and the like, leather couches and the majority of rooms have big en-suites. The old management were, for want of a better word, "cowboys" with big problems regarding deposits etc. If the new management are fair then it is a nice place to live and it's old prices were comparable to Groody and Courtyard I believe. Compare the new prices though with the 2 places named above before booking as they may be much cheaper for slightly less luxury.

i lived in brookfield last year for my 1st year and to be honest i didn't really enjoy the experience...my roommates where lovely but the complex itself is just so boring...its not that nice but then again it's nicer than some places...the location is just not convenient if you dont have a car. the floors are coming up in most of the apartments. it's not lively at all and you feel slightly isolated and left out from all the craic etc that goes on on campus and closer to the college. i guess everywhere is what you make it but i hated going back there most nights after college. the apartments are big and very nice compared to plassey and kilmurray but your paying the same price you'd pay for thomond or cappa and its just not the same standerd at all. i still havnt got my deposit back because we had no iron, bin and it had to be cleaned apparently but there was no iron on arrival the bin was in the kitchen and the place was spotless so i recommend anything you see missing report no matter how small and make sure you keep on top of things because everywhere is just out for themselves.:p

A new management company is due to be installed by the Administrator at some point next week. I'd say you could look into booking from Wednesday/Thursday.

I'm a postgrad going to UL for the first time this year. Comming up from Cork. I just applied for a spot in Dromroe. I emailed them during the week and got a reply saying they had free space.

Does anyone know how its filling up this year? As much as studying will take over my life, socialising and going out will be important too!

How's College Court for like meeting other students and what not because a friend of mine knows a good place there? Would I be better off as a first year applying for a place on campus?

Ok so I'm meant to be living in College Court next year, we gave a deposit in May and haven't heard a word from our landlord since. We've left about 20 missed calls, messages, e-mails and he just wont get back to us. Repeats are just around the corner and we had agreed to move into the house then. I drove by the house recentely and there seems to be tentants still living there? He's registered with UL as a landlord but they said that they can't help us. Any advice?

  • Registered Users Posts: 562 ✭✭✭mayo_lad

hi if he's registered with ul you could call the welfare oficer on mailto:suwelfare@ul.ie

best of luck the su should be able to sort it out

I left booking my accommodation really late and my only option was to live in Plassey..All I've heard is bad stuff about it and now I'm wondering whether I should look for somewhere off campus! It's going to be my first year in Voice and Dance..

  • Registered Users Posts: 988 ✭✭✭Zeouterlimits

Booking off campus (unless it's with friends) would be just as bad if not much worse. In Plassey you'll have the Manger & Security to go to whenever you have a problem.
Depending on your house mates you could have a great time. If they end up being "bad" then go to the manager early and express the desire to move.

In your position I'd go with Plassey (unless friends are an option).
    Enjoy your first year :)
