Why is this film called "American Beauty" if it's set in Canada?

that question keeps me awake at night....

where does it say its based in canada?

    found this on imdb:

The title of the film refers to a breed of roses.

    and

The area codes in Jane's phone book are 312, which is the area code for Chicago. The paper in the Burnham's kitchen appears to be the Chicago Sun-Times. Also, the lawn signs for both Carolyn and Buddy have phone numbers with an (847) area code. The (847) area code serves the northern suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. However, the license plates in the film are not Illinois plates, and the filmmakers made an effort to avoid any specificity in the locale, in favor of a more generic setting.

Interesting. I think it's at the start of the film, when Kevin Spacey was narrating over the arial shot of the street. Unless I'm mistaken he says "a normal family from toronto" or something to that effect.

I think I'd remember it saying that and don't think it says that at all.

I just had a look at a/the script and there's a bit at the very beginning I don't remember at all (jail and courtroom scene). And nothing about Toronto, Chicago or anywhere else.
