Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Or maybe they didnt do anything so stupid and immature while playing professional sport.

Refs are verbally and sometime physically assulted every weekend at every level of the game. That a lot worse than what Rooney did last nigh.

I dont condone what he did as you can see in my post in the match thread, He deserved to be sent for dissent off put keep it in perspective, some of the reaction would have you thinking he had physically assaulted the ref .

LOL @ the " You can't defend Rooneys Actions " Armchair Brigade , They've obviously never played competitive sport.

Anyone who has played competitive sports or not knows that if you mock/abuse the referee you'll get a card. Rooney is professional footballer, for him to do it makes him a idiot.

What the odds of him gettin a red card against Liverpool :D
Wouldnt mind if injured Hypia so hadda sub him after Tuesdays slip up. (respect Hypia but he seems to be loosin it with pace :( )
Or think Rooney could be on the bench as punishment?

Gotta get down to Bar to see this one :D

Never seen the match or highlights so can't comment on the sending off, but seems to be gettin very annoyed on the pitch. As they say, its only a game :p

How in Gods name can you even attempt to defend Rooney this time is beyond me.
I've already stated that it was a stupid thing for Rooney to do. But Jesus Christ he didn't feckin kill anyone. The way some of the people are going on, on here you'd think he did. He got a second yellow for something stupid. He'll know that himself but he's a winner and he was frustrated, these things will happen to a young player.

I also can't understand why supporters of other clubs care so much about Wayne Rooney being sent off. Is it because they care about the referee's feelings or is it because they want to get a cheap dig at a United player? I can't see any other reason...

I can see a long and fruitful career ahead for him...
    Thats nice to hear. :)

But he's a winner?! Explain that. He won a sending off alright....

    Ok an example for you...

Roy Keane in 1999... Tackle on Overmars after Arsenal had eqalised in the FA Cup semi final, he got sent off. Went on to win the treble that year.

But how's Rooney a winner. You said he was a winner. What has he won?

After all this winner talk I had to post F365's mediawatch:

    Getting On Our High Horse

More peculiarities surrounding the defence of Wayne Rooney.

After last week's insistence by Sir Red Face that Rooney's swearing fit in Belfast was simply trenchant proof that "he is a winner" (footballing fact: you only ever get called a winner when you've just lost), comes Alan Smith's explanation for the Boy Wonder’s dismissal in Spain:

"That's how he plays - he plays on the edge."

To borrow young Wayne's vernacular, what the f**k has clapping your hands sarcastically in the face of the ref got to do with 'playing on the edge'?

Still, last night’s endeavours did remind us of one thing - Gordon McQueen's view on Wayne as he commented on Sky Sports at the Manchester derby:

"Nothing fazes Rooney - he just gets up and gets on with the game."

    If only.

It seems as if people are beginning to equate his blatant inablilty to accept not winning, to him being a "winner".

In one Bazmo, again I'd ask the question if he wasn't a United player would there be so many orgasms and 4 pages on a non issue........

    probably not lol,nuff said.
He's won most of united's games this season.

lol the way your talking youd think he won something,we are still waiting for you to name something he won :)

Seriously though im a footie fan before a supporter of any team and i see one hell of a talented player in Rooney regardless of who he plays for ,its just sad for the sport that this guy has the potential to ruin his career and nobody seems to be able to tame him.
Some here say "ah hes only 19 give him a break".
I disagree, hes an adult playing for a huge club on a huge salary and one of the most talented players in the world.
If that doesnt make any 19 year old grow up then i really dont know.
19 years of age is no excuse for his outbursts.
I guarantee if hes still playing at 30 he will be the same unless ferguson or whoever succeeds him can sort him out.
There is no denying he is a time bomb in most games ive seen him.
The mind boggles that some on here are trying to defend him on this occasion.
We all agree hes a class act but it seems some Man u fans cant see the other side and keep defending him no matter how silly it makes them look, quite bizzare tbh.

Sorry but it takes 11 players to win a game, not 1. No matter how talented Rooney is, and I do agree that Rooney is very talented.

His main problem is the English media. They love building people up just to knock them down.

Have you ever played football at a competitive level?

It's so easy to get wound up, frustrated and determined in a big game, that clapping your hands is something which you would do without thinking. And thats playing old-mans football on a Sunday, none of us will ever experience the stress, pressure and strains of playing for a huge club, on a huge salary and being one of the best in the world, so you can't completly understand his frame of mind.

He was the only player on the pitch last night, bar scholes, that had a bit of fight and determination. He got caught in a moment, he obviously didn't mean any harm, was having a bit of a joke, and it got out of hand. Condemn the man, if you wish, but it'll be old news by tomorrow morning.

Its easy to sit there, and say what your saying but the pressure on him to perform, and his determination to win is second to none. Silly mistake, but it happens.

Yes boardsters, your opinion doesn't matter, and you just look silly if you support Man Utd. 'tbh' i think that statement makes you look a bit silly.

I'm not defending him, i'm not his mother, i'm just giving my opinion on the sending off. As are most others...

I don't see anyone defending him , Just some people are able to see his actions last night for what they were , a young player showing dissent braught on by the frustration of what he saw as a bad decision by the ref and others want to push their anti Utd. agenda(as usual) and cruicify him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,553 ✭✭✭✭Dempsey

    What bad decision?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,251 ✭✭✭✭Lemlin

It wasn't a bad decision. Rooney was booked for a tackle. He then clapped sarcastically in the face of the referee, which is clearly dissent. Appartently the referee has said that Rooney also hit him with one of his famous f-word rants.

I think Rooney is just trying to be football's equivalent of Colin Farrell!

"United Rant" sums it up very well
Rank these crimes against humanity in order of their depravity:

    The Holocaust, Germany/Poland, 1939-1945
    Stalinism, Russia, 1922-1953
    The Killing Fields, Cambodia, 1975
Harold Shipman's killing spree, England, 1970-2003
William Shatner's cover version of Pulp's "Common People", 2005
Wayne Rooney sarcastically clapping referee Kim Morten Nielsen, Spain, 2005

It's the last one, right? It must be or why would the press have gone so ape-**** over Wayne Rooney's red card against Villareal this week? Hang, draw and quarter the **** how dare he sarcastically clap a pretty average referee. The shock! The horror! The moral outrage!

After that let's get some perspective for once. Yes, Wayne Rooney is a chav-scum adolescent twat with a girlfriend that fell out of the ugly tree, slamming into every branch on the way down. Yes, the red mist descends on occasion. Yes, he was stupid to bait a referee who has always enjoyed the celebrity that comes with sending off big name players. But did he break anyone's legs? No! End a player's career? No! Commit an act of unspeakable violence? No! The moral outrage in the tabloids was to be predicted; as was the 'advice' offered by every washed-up ex-pro rent-a-gob going. The fact is, though, that there are only two people that matter: Wayne Rooney and Sir Alex Ferguson. And there's only one outcome that matters after that - that Wayne Rooney keeps performing for United. If that means staying on the pitch all the better but not at the cost of nullifying the greatest young talent in world football.

Amid the hyperbole and verbal diarrhea liberally spraying out of the mouths of the aforementioned rent-a-gobs one FACT has been neglected: Wayne Rooney's disciplinary record of 31 yellow cards, and two reds in more than 150 professional games is pretty decent. It's even better since he joined United. In fact that record compares favourably to other notably combustible players such as Roy Keane, Patrick Vieira and Alan Smith. The worst offender - Patrick Vieira - has 11 reds to his name so far, including one for Juventus in the Champions League on Wednesday. Has the Frenchman's career been "ruined" by those dismissals? Undoubtedly the answer is no. Yet, gob****es spraying their gob****e all over the place in their gob****e tabloid publications have been so quick to jump on Rooney's latest indiscretion and pronounce the young scouser's career on the brink of ruin. What utter bollocks!

Rant would have loved to see Rooney stay on the pitch Wednesday of course - he does no good to the team sitting in the dressing room or suspended. But we'll take a red card about every 18 months if the trade off is Rooney's trademark aggression; an attribute that scares the living **** out of defenders. Rooney no more needs anger management counseling than Rant needs a trip to the VD clinic. (How's the treatment coming along Rio?). Sure, cut out the stupidity - and Wednesday's card was stupid - but Rooney has got to play on the limit. That is the essence of Rooney. David Beckham had that fire as a youngster. Age, celebrity and money took it away along with the edge that he once had. A great player turned into no more than an average one in Beckham's case. That can't be allowed to happen to Rooney - even if young Wayne is ten times the player Beckham could ever dream of being.

So hang in their Ranters. Throw your tabloids away. In fact, wipe your arses on the sports sections. Better still, wipe your arse, then post back to the publication's registered office with excrement smeared on any offending articles. And then have faith that Sir Alex, despite his many faults, is still the very best in the business in helping to develop young talent. Rooney will mature and then papers will have to find someone else at United to have a go at. As the banner on the Stretford End once said, "Cantona '95, Beckham '98, Keano '00, Rio '04" - now add "Rooney 05".

Then join in and applaud Rooney the Red, brilliant player, immense talent, United legend.

Nice article but its a bit long!

Still, it ignores the one big problem that Rooney is going to face. Defenders and opposing fans are going to know how to get under his skin now.

He's been dealing well with opposing fans so far but it'll be a different kettle of fish when defenders start doing their best to rile him.

Well, it was a stupid thing for him to do, and he deserved to get sent off. But I seem to remember doing the odd stupid thing when I was hes age as well. I just hope he doesn't do anything like that in the world cup*

    *Assuming England get there ;)

He'll just have to learn how to cope with that while keeping to the rules and respecting the officials. He's not the first young player to have suspect temprement , Most of them learn over time to control themselves when the red mist descends.
