I was over in a friend's place last night trying to help him get connected to the net.
He thought there was something wrong with his modem/win setup or something. It can't get a dial tone or the line is engaged.

I think it has something to do with the Telecom Eireann call answering service.
If you pick the phone up, it goes straight into the messaging service automatically after a few seconds or so. It basically doesn't get on very well with the modem.

Has anyone any suggestions as to how to fix this within windows? Can you switch that Telecom **** off or what. This guy is gagging to play Quake etc. I feel guilty I couldn't help me.

Help me help you look good in his eyes. For the children's sake.

max, it probably is the telecom answer machine.
if you can turn it off and on at will then thats the way to go.

either that or you can try unchecking the 'wait for dialtone before dialing' box in connections in modem properties
hopefully that will bypass the answer service.
if not, um, get a new phone line.
just make sure that the modem id working by doing a more info on diagnostics.

if there is continuous no dialtone, check that the irq is correct. it should prolly be 11 if its pci.
just uninstall drivers and then remove modem and reboot.

but it sounds like anwer service.
try hyperterminal to see if you can call out.

also, if you can just press 9 or omething to exit the answer service, enter the reletive value in 'to access local calls' box under my locations of dialing properties.

    hmm, outta ideas now smile.gif

I get that problem too Max... and the only way I've found to get around it is to pull out the phone cable from my modem, jam it back in real quick, and hit the dial button, all in about 2-3 seconds...

It works, but it's a royal pain in the ass

Like call waiting there has to be a number sequence to press to disable it. Try ringing TE smile.gif

He rang Telecom and asked them to shut it off. Damn that boy is eager to get his hands on porn.

Pretty dumb that you can't key in a code to switch it off though.

me has call answering, me has no problems. sounds like his modem is taking too long to dial. turning it off is best idea, and remember to get him to turn off call waiting as well.

I also have that problem, but then I AM using a 100ft extension cord that's made up of two 50ft cords taped together. (seriously)
    But I still get 120ping in Quake-Indigo-CA.

TE is a pain in the tits...

My brother has that call waiting service 'The person you are trying to call knows that you are on the line, please hold you little **** 'cos I'm bored to death answering other people's calls.. when are these stingy *******s going to pay for an automatied answering service'...

Anyway, If I ring him while he's online

    1. The call doesn't go through
    2. It cuts him off the internet
    3. He gets a bit ****ed off if he's playing a game or something
    4. I do it as often as I can and calim innocence.... smile.gif

Anyway, apart from getting rid of the service, is there a way around that? (there's talk of my house getting that service connected..... sad.gif )

    J.
