    Can anyone tell me where i can find a freeware java compiler that i could use with text pad ??

    javac can be downloaded off www.sun.com .I thinks it's part of the SDK. Somebody else might be more precise.

    Sun's JDK is free, and it's as Java as it gets.

    J2SE is probably the one you need (the bog standard JDK).

    Download the SDK, and maybe Eclipse as an editor.

    i would agree with the above.

    but you should try to get a few simple progs running on the command line, hello world etc, before you try to dive into a complex ide like eclipse.

    it is worth the effort, but may throw you off if you try to use it at first without help from a competent user at hand
