i had the same trouble with a new nano last week, it froze up on me ... didn't install the drivers because I'd had an Ipod mini which I was using on the same machine. I let the battery die and then hard reset it, after that it worked.
I'm gathering that you have already installed the drivers. Any time i had trouble in the past I did a hard reset and that fixed it.
Try here for hard reset instructions http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61705
    Hope that helps.
