Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Connection Problemos - Schoolboy Error?

    Here’s my problem:

My friend bought a new plug-in wireless card for his laptop. I’m using a Linksys router, which works well with my Dell with built in wireless card – I’m on IBB. His card is working fine, it detects the router grand and I can get into the router config page off his computer. It even shows up in the system tray that the link is connected, signal strength, etc.

But! The internet just won’t work. Won’t. I’ve tried everything I can think of, and I know I’m probably missing something stupid and very, very basic. When I open IE or Firefox, it just won’t go through. Similarly, a CMD-ping won’t work either!

Can anyone talk me through this, or point out where I’m probably going wrong? Cheers

Did his PC get an IP address?
    From the command prompt: ipconfig

Is his card configured for a static IP address/DNS or is it DHCP?
    1. Right Click [My network places] (assuming it's windows XP) and select properties.
    2. Right click [Wireless Network Connection]
    3. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) from the list and click [Properties]
Is is set to: Obtain an IP address automatically?
    Obtain DNS server address automatrically?

He can see your router properties. Is this from a browser?

Do you have secuity options enabled? WEP/WPA/Mac Adress limiting?

Oh, and your router is setup to cater for more than 1 client, right? Have you setup an IP address range? Enabled DHCP?

The PC didn't get an IP addy...
His card is configured the same as my own, setting for setting.
He can see the router properties from IE and Firefox, yup.
The router already supports three clients... No IP address range, DHCP enabled!

Please confirm whether you're using XP (SP2?)
Did you install any software (That accompanied the card perhaps?)

Yes to XP2, nope to the software - windows installed the driver automatically

Can/did you try someone elses wireless card in his laptop?
Can he connect to a different wireless network?

Can't try another card, don't got one!

As for the other wireless network? No.

I personally think I've got something done wrong in the "connection" setup part of IE!

Last time this happened to me, the DHCP settings were set to get an IP address automatically, but a DNS address was set manually. Exact same symptoms as you have.
