Hey, I'm writing an article for an online paper (based in the US) on drinking/celebration on JC night. I'd like to talk to a couple of people about what they did that night. Were they drinking, why were they/why not etc. I won't neccesarily use names if people aren't happy about it but I do need a couple of people. Anyone…

hence his use of the past tense.

"what they did that night"
"were they drinking"
"why were they/why not"

nothing wrong with writing an article on an event that happened one week ago, and also seeing as it's based in the U.S they may not necessarily know when the junior cert night is.
