Ipod Mini error message

When my friend turns on he's ipod mini. he getsthe apple sign, then right away gets a picture of a folder with a bit exclamation mark on it. and nothing else happens. any idea what can be done or what this is? Cheers

Sounds like the harddrive is messed up.
Is it under warranty? Has he tried contacting Apple?
