60 year-old wall insulation

    Hi all,

Anybody recognise what type of old insulation this is (see photos).
It is on the inside of all the external walls of a 60 year old cottage.

It looks a bit like compressed bark or cork or something along those lines? The insulation is attached to the blockwork one side and has plaster on the inside.

In general it is holding up very well - both the adhesion of the insulation to the blocks and the plaster to the insulation. There are only a couple of places where the wall has blown-out the plaster.

    Any experience/insights of the above?

    Cheers

    Fred

that might be aspestos. If it is, you're better off getting rid of it fairly quickly. A lot of older houses used to use it for insulation but there's all sorts of health problems associated with it now. From the pictures, it looks like asbestos...

I think you will need registered contractors to remove it if it is asbestos. You do in the UK anyway.

Thanks for replies. The reason I didn't think it was asbestos was because it looks like cork and bark - unless its binded together by some asbestons-type material?

    Attached another photo.Any other takers?
