Help please with my 7800GT

    Hi,

    Last week I bought:

    2 x 7800GT 256MB
    2 x DFI LanParty 915P-T12 Socket 775

The reason I bought 2 of each is 1 set was for a mate who basicly has the same system as me. I bought these to replace my AGP Board and my 9800 Pro. The rest of my machine looks like the following:

    Intel Pentium 4 3.6GHz
1GB Corsair XMS PC3200 LL DDR
    200GB and 120GB SATA Harddrives
Creative Audigy 2 ZS Pro 7.1 Sound Card.

Ok my problem is the following: I play World of Warcraft the most and my new system is not and I mean not performing any better than the 9800 Pro. I am currently using the exact same settings as when I had the 9800 Pro and I am getting no improvement. My mate with the same system is having similar problems. The cards are not faulty and the board is fine so I am asking people why am I not seeing any major increase in performance and what can be done to increase performance (NOT OC).

I am running WinXP Pro and driver version 78.01.

Are there better drivers available because in all fairness this new card should be eating everything in its path.

    Thanks all.

Try running some benchmarking apps on the new card
The 7800GT is a fairly new card so there may be some patches available on the WOW home page that may help

A new card can't work magic on older games.

If you ran everything at full with WoW with your 9800Pro, then a Geforce 1000000000 couldn't make it look any better.

Try playing something like Doom 3 or Battlefield 2 at full whack with all options on and you should notice changes there much easier.

You said yourself you are running at the exact same settings. Obviously then you aren't going to see any difference.....is that not self explanatory?

Could you post what settings you are using?

If you are using low resolutions its possible that you would get the same results as the 9800pro. Kick it up to 1600 * 1024 and see if it still performs the same.

Download FRAP's and also post the frame rates you are getting.

Did you reformat and reinstall windows when you upgraded?

If not you should use a driver cleaner to ensure the old ATI drivers are completely removed.

Just out of interest did you upgrade your processor too?

The reason i was using same settings was because the performace was badish when i pushed them up. But i will try a few things thank you.

Also yes i did i full format and reinstall of windows. i dont believe in upgrades with an OS. Yes i have to say Battlefield 2 runs alot better than the 9800 Pro. But WoW is not an old game, if you own it you will see that it has alot of the features that this card is meant to support. The res i use in WoW is 1280*1024.

why did you buy a board with such an old chipset?

Make sure that WoW doesnt control the the AA/AF, your nVidia panel does! It should play that at 1280*1024 no problems at all...

That card / processor combo should play anything at full resolution with good framerates. The gfx card will be processor limited though. Make sure you have the latest chipset and video drivers (i.e. not the ones that came on the cd). Is it an AGP card, or PCI-e?

Well the reason i bought 915P-T12 is because i dont have DDR2, cant afford to buy a gig of DDR2 at the moment so i went with a board that supports both DDR and DDR2.

I have the most up to date drivers for GFX so i will try getting MB drivers later on. The card is PCI Express.

Ah, if you're using out of the box chipset drivers then you should see a decent increase when you get the latest and greatest. Also consider a bios flash if there are mutiple revisions between yours and latest available.

What power supply have you got? Brand and watts?

My PSU is Antec 600 Watt so its not a power problem. I was on DFI's site and i was reading the bios versions but there does not seem to be any major changes in the bios versions. can you link me the latest Intel chipset drivers please, i will try them.

    Did you download FRAPs http://www.fraps.com/download.php

It will let you know how many FPS you are getting which is a invaluble performance indicator. It will also show you if you are experiencing drops in frame rate.
