Last year, the Registrar Philip Nolan said that modularisation/semesterisation would not affect any current students.

The minutes from the Teaching and Learning Board state that..

“The Registrar informed the group that Professor Mannion’s Modularisation Group had agreed that there should be a three-year rolling implementation of modularisation across the University, starting with the September 2005 intake of students, so that these students would enter a fully modularised programme, with year 2 of their programme starting in 2006, and all levels of all programmes fully modularised by 2007. This would mean that existing students would not be modularised or semesterised, although if a particular Faculty wished to offer additional choice, or semesterise, they could, provided they had agreement from their student body.”

The Registrar has now announced his intention to fully modularise the university next September in 2006. This means that current second, third, fourth and fifth years would be modularised/semesterised for the remainder of their courses.

No consultation has been entered into as of yet between the university and students about this change.

UCD Students' Union has called an Open Public Meeting on the matter to discuss what our response should be to these plans and what action, if any should be taken..

32. Will UCD Horizons affect me?

UCD’s modular system (UCD Horizons) is being introduced gradually, with first year students in 2005 being the first students to undertake this initiative. It is likely that the second and third year of UCD degree programmes will be modularised together starting September 2006. Students in first year in 2004/05 would then enter a modular third year in 2006. Furthermore, if you have to repeat a year your repeat year may be in modular format.

33. What will happen if I take a year out?

If you were part of the 2004 student intake and take a year out in 2005, the programme you return to will be in modular format. "

just to clarify a point I am against modularistaion for the students that had already commenced their degrees they could have had no idea about it when they chose their course i believe it is very unfair for it to be thrown upon them with no consultation the fact that the SU were told otherwise last year while the 2006 date was put on the horizons site just prooves that the college are just trying to roll this out like a steam train and hoped that when the new sebats took over this year they would just accept it while it dosen;t affect me becuase my course was almost completely modulised anyway but shows the arrogance of the college in forcing this onto current students without even the slighest amount of consultation.

There's a decision due to be made "in principle" on the 27th October about whether to modularise everyone in September 2006 or not.

I'll be gone, but it's a horrible thing to do to people. It's already effecting my degree, everything's being converted from units to credits and so my course, and I'm guessing many more like it have had to be altered to fit the credits structure.
