Digiweb pings

Anyone here use digiweb (the dsl variety) for playing games? If so, what's it like? I'm on UTV 1mb at the moment, but their 8gig cap is really annoying me (Battlefield 2 is the most bandwidth-hungry bastard of a game ever). Pings to UK servers on UTV are usually pretty good (40-50ms), with pings to Irish servers usually abysmal.

    Cheers.

I don't have it, but my buddy does. FYI Digiweb are very stict with caps, if you go over the cap you get your speed radically reduced for the rest of the month and they are often slow to put you back up to normal speed afterwards.

Well that beats the **** out of UTV at the moment. I have an 8 gig cap for the same price as digiweb's 20 gig cap, and UTV charge per megabyte asap when you go over it, as I have this month (first time ever btw) :/
I'd have no problem with being throttled after going over the cap, since the only options UTV give are:
    1) pay per meg over the cap
    2) get cut off until next month

Any word on pings though? Main thing I use it for is online games. Apparently BF2 ate up about 4.5 gigs of my 8 gigs this month with its ~70MB/hour usage on 64 player servers.

    Hi Stephen

Sorry pal, I thought i replied to this thread!

pings, give me a site if you want to konw what the pings are like

Pinging www.boards.ie [82.195.136.36] with 32 bytes of data:

    Reply from 82.195.136.36: bytes=32 time=22ms TTL=59
    Reply from 82.195.136.36: bytes=32 time=20ms TTL=59
    Reply from 82.195.136.36: bytes=32 time=29ms TTL=59
    Reply from 82.195.136.36: bytes=32 time=26ms TTL=59

    Ping statistics for 82.195.136.36:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 20ms, Maximum = 29ms, Average = 24ms

I'm on their 1meg basic package and it's pretty good. Haven't gotten in any trouble over the cap issue but when I was on their wireless package I had my speed limited many a time, they had a much lower cap back then. One of the times I did get restricted I rang them and they lifted the restriction straight away.

Tech support is ok, there is one or two fellas that think they know everything. For example one time I was having connection issues and all I could get off one lad was that it must be a firewall, couldn't possibly be anything else. I assured him that I had them all disabled, but he suggested their may be one I don't know about. Eventually, I get through to a girl that knows her stuff and she discovers they had assigned me and another customer the same static ip address, and it was completely their fault and she was very sorry.

So thats it, anymore questions post away and ill do my best to answer. Sorry for the late reply!

    Cheers :)

What're pings like to games4.iol.ie and, say, clarity.jolt.co.uk?

I'll be going for the 1 meg package too - same price as UTV with their 8 gig cap and crap pings.

    There you go.

My gaming days are over until I can afford some new hardware so I can't tell you what it will be like! Anything else just ask. Oh and just so you know, the wireless router is crap!

Excellent. I have my own router anyways :)
I got a stock response from them when I emailed them asking about the process of switching from some other ISP to themselves, offering me ISDN
Think I'll have to ring up and clarify things to them.

Check out the pings from UTV here:

Pinging games4.iol.ie [193.120.123.133] with 32 bytes of data:

Its not normally as bad as that, but its too bloody unreliable to keep using for games.

Ya they're not great at all!

Just did the first one again

Pinging games4.iol.ie [193.120.123.133] with 32 bytes of data:

Pretty much the same so they seem steady enough.

mmmm, had a problem with digiweb in the past- their customer services leave a lot to be desired!!!

I reckon they are dodgy and I wouldnt go near them with the 20foot pole they wanted to erect ontop of my chimney!!

    For comparison:

A IBB ripwave 8.6kM from base station using a MMDS bare dish propped on desk in bedroom to get about 60% signal quality and 50% strength.

    C:\>ping games4.iol.ie

Pinging games4.iol.ie [193.120.123.133] with 32 bytes of data:

    Reply from 193.120.123.133: bytes=32 time=127ms TTL=52
    Request timed out.
    Request timed out.
    Reply from 193.120.123.133: bytes=32 time=143ms TTL=52

    Ping statistics for 193.120.123.133:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 2, Lost = 2 (50% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 127ms, Maximum = 143ms, Average = 135ms

If Digiweb bad, what does that say about Eircom. NTL Digital Cable, Chorus PowerNet and IBB?

Just for laughs (), here's a random comparison with Digiweb satellite to games4.iol.ie-

Pinging games4.iol.ie [193.120.123.133] with 32 bytes of data:

    Reply from 193.120.123.133: bytes=32 time=1687ms TTL=53
    Reply from 193.120.123.133: bytes=32 time=3590ms TTL=53
    Reply from 193.120.123.133: bytes=32 time=834ms TTL=53
    Reply from 193.120.123.133: bytes=32 time=837ms TTL=53

    Ping statistics for 193.120.123.133:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 834ms, Maximum = 3590ms, Average = 1737ms

Needless to say, no on-line gaming here :(

    By the way.

The pings are good on the digiweb basic dsl package because they use radsl with minimum interleaving.

However, from 2mb up they use adsl with high interleaving and pings are like this:

Pinging boards.ie [82.195.136.250] with 32 bytes of data:

    Reply from 82.195.136.250: bytes=32 time=77ms TTL=59
    Reply from 82.195.136.250: bytes=32 time=66ms TTL=59
    Reply from 82.195.136.250: bytes=32 time=65ms TTL=59
    Reply from 82.195.136.250: bytes=32 time=64ms TTL=59

    Ping statistics for 82.195.136.250:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 64ms, Maximum = 77ms, Average = 68ms

That's strange - I'm on the 2MB package but my pings to boards.ie are like this:

Pinging boards.ie [82.195.136.250] with 32 bytes of data:

    Reply from 82.195.136.250: bytes=32 time=24ms TTL=60

My pings to games4.iol.ie and clarity.jolt.co.uk are almost identical to what Spartacus93 posted before. In any case, much better than UTV that I was foolishly with for just too long...

while our core network is optimised for best performance, we cannot dictate the parameters of phone exchange/lines used for dsl. This results in performance variances between individual connections, depending on exchange activity, your distance from exchange / radsl etc, and so on.

Hi ceepee - do you work for Digiweb?

In general an ISP will have similar ping at each exchange, there might be a some overcrowded exchanges here and there, and an extra 8ms if you live in Cork or something, but usually ping results from 1 guy is good enough from me - since it gives you an idea of the routing that the ISP uses etc. For example, in the past there have been ISPs who would route via New York to get to Netherlands, and this was very bad for gaming - but it seems that this is not the case with Digiweb.

I want to clarify something for a friend of mine who is looking to sign up to Digiweb tomorrow with gaming as a priority, so this is very important for him:

The Clown Man says that "from 2mb up they use adsl with high interleaving", I remember this used to be the case with Eircom. However, J-blk's pings show that his 2mb dsl is using low interleaving.

My friend is interested in getting the 3mb/256k package, since the bigger upload is important. The Clown Man - the pings you have pasted there... are they from the 3mb package or 2mb? I will have to tell my friend not to get the 3mb package if interleaving is on high. Can anyone confirm for sure whether or not interleaving is high on the 2mb package?
