    Hi,
I'm looking for large consultancies based in Dublin (or at least Ireland) capable of taking on a fairly hefty PHP Business Application project. I've had a search thru the web and most of the companies out there are Graphic design/CMS organisations and are quite small. This project is much more of a business transaction processing style application. Another major issue is with the size of many of the companies - we'd need to know there'll be support for years into the future.

Can anyone recommend some decent consultancies that can handle business applications in php and are big enough to have strong project management and business process capabilities?

    Cheers
    J.

Trying not to be t0o unhelpful here

    am why PHP?

I don’t know too many companies that would be cable of what is obviously a large project.

Have you considered hiring a team of developers for initial set-up and since you will probably need someone for maintenance even with a support company?

Why not take a PHP developer on a permanent maintenance basis.
(that’s basically my job at the moment)

    Hi Nutjob,

Thanks for your post. I don't really want to get into a discussion of architectures here. We already have identified potential suppliers for asp, and jsp/javabean solutions. We'd just like to see if there are any php providers - simpler architecture, more portable, quicker to code, cheaper to deploy.
"PHP is proving to be the lead scripting model in enterprise web developments" - Mark Driver (VP & Research Director, Gartner)

On hiring a team of developers etc: we're trying to move towards a more outsourced model. Anyway, by the time we identify a team, set team-leads, bring them up to speed with our systems, etc, we'd be moving beyond out target end-dates. Add in the rates we'd have to pay for short term contractors, plus the fact that a couple of them are guaranteed to be useless, then the headaches involved just aren't worth it.
We're not an IT consultancy; we'd prefer to stick to our core competencies and get another specialised organsiation to handle our IT development.

Being in consultancy myself I would have to say that the large majority of consultancy firms that could take this on would probably all go for JSP or ASP, simply because they see them as better supported scripting languages(this is not really true)

If it has to be PHP i'm sure that it could be arranged but you would probably have a slightly longer development time(initially) due to the developers having to learn PHP.

I personally believe that PHP is a fantastic solution for most web development, but getting the upper management to change their views is a difficult.

I would have to say that the software licensing costs(in particular with Microsoft solutions) saved would more then offset the extra initial development time/cost.

PM me if you would like some more details

If its a large contract then XML Workshop may be worth a shot... afaik they have developed/are currently developing a lot of Smart Telecoms back end systems, they have a small but very professional group of php programmers in there as well.
