Any chance of a gamesoc LAN. Everyone could bring their own machines or whatnot? Find a venue?

Would a laptop be needed, yeh?

presumably - i can't see comp services being that generous!

I seem to remember someone mentioning that GameSoc used to have LANs in a cafe in Dundrum or somewhere because one of the guys was able to get cheap rates on the comps. Think that deal's gone now though.
I'd be up for this anyway. Haven't had a chance to lug my comp around and game yet ;)

Well id we had a venue Laptops would be handy. Otherwise get some pressure to find a new place to game. Im sure some Cafes wouldnt mind the deal

I would've said no. Usually you bring your desktop to these kind of events, I definately be up for something along these lines.
There's a lot of hassle that goes with it though. First you need the space and then you need all the lan hubs and servers. And lots of cables.

A laptop wouldn't really cut it for gaming. If we were to go to the trouble of bringing our desktops somewhere we'd want to be spending a lot of time there to make it worth while.

    Yep. :)

We are planning to run a LAN in the next few weeks. Provisional date is for Friday 14th of September. It was going to be the Friday next week (same week as the Halo contest), but that's Serenity day. :)

It almost certainly will not be held in UCDD. Some net cafe will be rented/used for the night. It's looking to be a join NetSoc/GameSoc event.

    More details will be forthcoming

This sounds wicked, I'd definitely be up for this (as opposed to the Halo tourney, which I'm still going to despite the sure knowledge that my ass will be toast).

Any idea what game(s) will be played?

    Counter-Strike?
    Day of Defeat?
    Half Life 2?
    Brothers In Arms?
    CoD?

    That stuff's always good...

FPS games are always good. Stratagies take to much time at a LAN. CS and DOD because then (attendence depending) everyone can be broken up into teams ect

    Seb sucks

My personal favourite FPS is Rainbow Six Rogue Spear : Black Thorn, but I'd say Counterstrike would provide a greater turnout :) And it's not a terribly bad game either.

So would we have to bring our own PC's? Or would it be in this internet café? Would they not mind having computer games installed on 30-40 computers? I don't know how this sheeeiiiite works :p

    I second these suggestions!

Counter-Strike would actually be good with a team of decent people, unlike on public servers.

guy: "ok, we can do this if 3 people do *this* and 3 others do *this*"
    team: "ok"..."stfu"
    *bloodbath ensues*

I think organising everyone tp bring their pc's to a room in UCD would be better and get an all nighter going there.

I'd be up for bringing in my own computer...

Would anyone else do this ??

P.S. Halo was a good laugh, not much socialising however.....

I'd be up for it but we'd need a venue first and all that malarky

Surely a room can be found the same way a room is found for all the other club nights and what not. Do the laptop areas have cable internet aswell as wireless, one of them might be perfect for a LAN? I'd be well up for bringing my pc down.

I'd be up for bringing my pc up too. Would UCD allow us to spend a night there?

Booking a room is not too good. The rooms are only available until half nine though, maybe that'll get extended with the new opening hours. As it stands, the maximum session would only be about 4 hours and that would get further eaten into by setup and takedown times. Plus services are unlikely to be keen on too much messing with the room set up, which would involve removing all the journo chairs and getting tables in.

Maybe the best way to do it would be to get Gamesoc/Netsoc to run it as a special event on the weekend. Arts is open on a Sunday now, if sufficient interest was shown it could be possible to run it in the social area by the blob or similar, just get tables and chairs organised and access to sufficient power sources. Wouldn't involve trying to squeeze into the classrooms, could be run as an all day 9 - 6 event and could be planned as required depending on number of participants that sign up?

Sounds like a plan Tayto, maybe we could get netsoc in on this event. anyone here who organises gamesoc have any input as to where/what we can go/do with this idea.

/me is on gamesoc and netsoc committee. :) There's a lot of cross over amoung the nerd societies.

There was a netsoc meeting recently and this was brought up. When we have a LAN, it will be a joint netsoc and gamesoc event. If only to split costs and poster monkeys. No firm plans yet.
