Laptop hard drive prob

Lo folks. a mate of mine is trying to install windows on his laptop but it keeps hanging when scandisk getsn to 72%. He also cant format and a scandisk from dos dont help. ANy ides, could it be the hd itself is damaged or a pesky bad sector. Any ideas plz to cause or a possible solution. Thanks

What does the format say when it doesn't work ? Odds are the hd is screwed, or perhaps it's somehow getting detected incorrectly in the bios, though i'd imagine that in that case it wouldn't boot up off it at all.

He said he fiddled around a bit and got it workin then.
Bit weird maybe he just messed up
