My Metro experience started off really well too, but in the last month or so I've been getting speeds like this (see pic). It's been a long time since I've seen 3MB :(

EDIT: Tried again and now it's reporting 2.86 Mbps, but shouldn't I expect better than the 1MB or so during the day too?

I'm thinking of getting Metro installed in my office. The girl on the phone said that there wouldn't be a problem setting up a lan line + fax machine through the wireless modem. I'm probably going to sign up on monday. I'd appreciate any suggestions though!

Sorry to say but at this point I'm beginning to regret, seriously regret, moving from BT to Metro, the phone service is appaling; talking in a tunnel;dailing sequence takes twice as long as before. Voip(Skype) is s***e on Metro and almost impossible to use connection breaking up especially long distance, was perfect on BT. My broadband signal is poor, pings all over the shop, NO CONSISTANCY !!±!! I am paying for something I am NOT getting. And frankly I don't really have enough time or patience to operate as a guinea pig for Metro, these problems should have been sorted BEFORE they started selling their product. I'm not a bit happy and I'm looking over my shoulder at mates who have other providers who have upped their speeds and limits and have excellent phone and voip services. Please Chaz let us disgruntled users of Metro be reassured that everything will be just as it should real soon.

    where are u based info?

I'm based in Limerick...have metro now about 2 months and apart from it being down for 30 mins one day while i was at work it's been flawless..always hitting about the 2.65mb in isptest and pings always very low..not sure about the phone service as I'm not using it yet..still have to get a phone for it..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 847 ✭✭✭mickger

What kind of pings are people getting to Jolt.co.uk and boards.ie? I get an average of 60 to Jolt and 47 to Boards. I'm not a gamer but if i was or thought of getting in to it would i need better pings that what i'm getting?? Just to add i have no problem with speed and regulary hit 350kbs and 2.90mb on the irishisptest which is alot better speeds than people are reporting with the DSl upgrade this weekend from Eircom:)

My metro itself is fine and Skype is better than GSM phone generally. Poorer to IBB users :)

To some aDSL users it is better than regular phone.

But I want the physical phone and Fax changed. Fax will work on Metro phone port but not on Skype or other VOIP services.

If you have bittorrant or anything similar it wrecks VOIP calls.

  • Registered Users Posts: 343 ✭✭Gigiwagga

watty, bittorrent wrecks voip, do you mean having Bittorrent open while using voip, or actively downloading a bittorrent while skyping, could you expand a little please, without going to much off topic, thanks.:)

Nothing should affect Metro's phone service, as they apparently prioritise the voice traffic on their network. Heavy usage of your line will affect Skype or VoIP unless you implement your own QoS.

Those are great pings. Would there be any particular reason why i'm not getting the same pings speeds???

    I cut big branches today!

    Before my rx was -8dBmV to -9dBmV, S/N about 23 to 25dB and TX 47dBmV to 55dBmV

    Now
    Downstream
    Frequency Power	-4 dBmV
Signal to Noise Ratio	28 dB	Modulation	QAM64
    Upstream
    Frequency Power	40 dBmV
Upstream Data Rate	5120 Ksym/sec	Modulation	QPSK

Two mor branches to cut on another tree beside it.

Now a working phone connection would make it perfect.

I think your LOS has a lot to do with it. When mine was installed, the engineer said I had an almost perfect LOS. Also, apparantly it makes a difference on what floor you have your PC, i.e Weaker signal on the ground floor, mine's on 2nd Floor.
Mine's 29 to jolt and 21 also to boards.
There goes my ping record

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,417 ✭✭✭✭watty

No I don't think LOS makes much difference. If it works, it works. My pings similar 18 to 40 depending on destination (or up to 950 to an IBB user!), I had poor LOS. I'm also 12.5km from base station.

Pings are more to do with overall network route and congestion etc.

Round trip time on Skype Video (which seems to be peer to peer once running) is an interesting test to a friends system:
    All PCs Near Limerick
In house on LAN 8ms (proves it must be peer to peer once running)
    To IBB customer 1970ms !!!
To Eircom basic customer aDSL near Castletroy 250ms on occasion but:
420ms today. (Both ends using Wifi to laptop)

I'm near patrickswell 6km approx from Raheen in Limerick. I'm using very old SW firewall/proxy on a P90, which likely adds a delay to data / pings.

I can only do ping tests from the firewall PC, not from inside the LAN. Hence interest in Skype.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,992 ✭✭✭✭gurramok

All i can say is that i'm prob less than 1km from base station, with perfect LOS with signal strength of +9, also my PC is upstairs in house.
Whether its the reason for my(and Freemans) steady service and good pings, only the experts would know :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 842 ✭✭✭pjproby

i notice the speeds are much more consistent at the 2.80 mark yesterday and today-related presumably to the eircom upgrade?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,275 ✭✭✭Chaz

Guys, phone provisioning is starting again today. I have PMed some of you. If you are waiting for your line - PM me your WIR Code and Details and Ill get them sorted and your line should be working by the end of the day, if not sooner.

    Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,606 ✭✭✭Jumpy

Just got mine put in today, apparently a perfect signal... 0.0?

Speeds are not great though, 995kbps, apparently this speeds up about an hour after install.. would this be right?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,275 ✭✭✭Chaz

Jumpy - PM me your details please.
0 is not 'perfect' signal but it is good - more than acceptable.

Where do I get a LAN interface module (original style PS2)?

Brill, Chaz. I have the phone!

Now we wait for Eircom to change the existing number over!

Mine took 7-8 weeks in two stages. First stage involved putting the antenna up, then 3 weeks later actually connecting it after phonecalls and PM'ing the dudes on here twice.

And here you go persian, ping stats as at 20.30

    Ping statistics for 217.18.19.250:
    Packets: Sent = 90, Received = 90, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 28ms, Maximum = -56ms, Average = 70ms

Does anyone know why one ping time was returned -56ms (yes, MINUS 56) and why this was considered the longest?

We have been without the Digiweb phone service since we had Metro installed i.e. around two months ago.

After a month or so of no service, we asked Digiweb for a discount but were flatly refused. The reason given was that the phone service was a "bonus" service, as if this meant that Digiweb could promise it, even be under contract to provide it, yet still have the option of not delivering it!

The notion that describing the Metro phone service as "free" or "bonus" in some way indemnifies Digiweb from state regulations concerning false advertising would be laughable were it not for the fact that our Eircom bills are racking up.

If someone from Digiweb is reading this, please get in touch and reassure us that our phone service will be provided in due course and that we'll shortly be getting what we pay for.

If not, we will be disconnecting from Metro. Furthermore, we'll be lodging an official complaint to the Advertising Standards Authority for Ireland (ASAI).
