Funny Metro installers didn't have a problem drilling an access hole through my timber window frame, did a great job with the install, were effecient and pleasant and careful from what I could see. On-site care from Metro:10/10.:)

It's probably a different subcontractor company in Cork and Limerick. In Dublin, I was told that the subcontractor works under a "dictate" that they do not install the cable through window frames.

The reason he gave (I was told it was the boss I was speaking to - and the installation engineer had told me the same story earlier) was because property owners can easily change the windows; that the windows are the first things to go in a building. And if this happens, then the install has to be redone.

The sub-contractor gets paid for a permanent install, he said, so they are not allowed to go through window-frames.

    (Crazy eh??)

ok after the recommendation here I contacted complaints@digiweb.ie and after 3 weeks waiting I was told the installer would be out today. He arrived and from the roof top told me I hadn't a hope of reaching....wait for it... Three Rock!!! from here (Temple bar). Now If I had known that Digiweb were using the Dublin Mountains for their city center metro connections 3 weeks ago I have gone elsewhere.
Looks like I'm going to have to risk the crappiest wireless service in town...IBB..... I feel nausea coming on

Clearwire any use to you? I got that working at Connolly Station before... they (Clearwire) told me that their nearest base was Ranelagh.

Clearwire blocks everything and is no use for buisness purposes.

It occurred to me that demand is currently outweighing supply for wireless installation in Dublin (hence the long wait for an install). So the installation company has the option of choosing the less complicated, less time-consuming jobs. There are undoubtedly situations where installations are impossible, but the approach of the installation team (that I met) was to find a show-stopper problem, or another, or another, and get out of there ASAP. I'm positive that Metro is losing customers because of this. But I suppose that's full employment for you - as a friend of mine said, if a team of Polish guys showed up they would have been delighted to do the job!

Does this mean that it is Metro policy to let 'harassed and overworked' contractors decide who gets their broadband?

Or anything else really, bar having a nice black box with shiny lights on it.

im just waiting for the day metro is on the RTE mast, then i can have the CPU on my house and have a better signal.
Not that by service is anyway bad, but i have been informed that it would be less realible than normal because of my SNR.

And hdtv is said to be expected this year also, any info on that?

It looks okay now (at least until it gets to dublin).

There might be some periods (7pm ish) when things go slow due to numbers of people using it.

I'm only guessing though...it'd be good if other limerick users could "apt-get install mtr" and paste in results...

    regards,
    Dave

My metro has gone for 27 hrs now with just a minute or so of normal signal level every 5 to 10 minuts, but before the CM progress go past ranging the signal drops below -22dBmV and then it gives up.

    I'm on an alternate system..

Sounds like most people who are experiencing problems are in Limerick. Is it pretty good in Dublin?

It came back 50mins ago with upstream speed reduced from 5M to 2.56M bps. (Actual uploading was 0.5Mbps so the change in upstream speed shouln't affect that).

Seems a lot faster on download.

Limerick seems to have been having teething pbroblems

Airblazer - nothing was changed - should not have any problems. The issue on Sector 2 is sorted as of 10 mins ago.

Can you show me tracert or similar to where the problem is coming from?

    Hi watty,

    PM sent with details...

Yeah, I'm still involved with irishwan..... & getting reasonable pings to Tuam :)
Give me a shout if you want to connect in, there are a few backups available on the WAN these days, and it's a lot more easier going than it used to be....

Total non-techie person here so be gentle! I just moved into a bungalow in Blackrock, Co. Dublin and need a broadband connection to work from home. I had ntl in the old place, which was great, but they say my new place is not within their service area. We don't have (or want) a landline so I ordered Metro on January 10th. I was told it would be about 3 weeks before they could install it, and that the box-thingy would have to go on the roof rather than the side of the house as it's a bungalow. 3 weeks to the day after I ordered someone from Metro called me and told me they were 'upgrading the service in my area' so it would be about another 2 weeks before they could come and install. That was about a week ago.

I have two questions for you knowledgeable people:

    1) what exactly is involved in the installation - no one in Digiweb mentioned any drilling to me? Is the box/wire/hole noticeable when looking at the house from outside? (The house is owner occupied, but I'm not sure the owner fancies holes being drilled into her new place)

    2) After all the delays, is Metro going to be worth my while? Any other users in Blackrock? Would I be better off going with another operator (suggestions)?

    Thanks in advance!

Apart from the hassle, if any, of getting a landline, BT Ireland does 2Mbps for €40 or 3Mbps for €50, that's including line rental. If the place has a deactivated phone line already, you can get it enabled quickly and I believe it's free too. I think you can get broadband test data from the old line too, so you don't need to risk anything. It's highly unlikely a line in Blackrock will fail the test in any event.

All these external aerial jobs require a hole in the wall. Not a big deal really. I haven't seen a Digiweb aerial but if you look at chimneys in your neighbourhood I'm sure you'll see Irish Broadband aerials. That's more or less what it will look like. IBB's aerials are diamond shaped, sort of 30x30cm.

I can't really see any reason in getting Digiweb as things stand. They were fairly competitive before Eircom's speed upgrades, but now I wouldn't bother.

Airblazer - nothing was changed - should not have any problems. The issue on Sector 2 is sorted as of 10 mins ago.
