Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

no, (if it helps - you might be able to add Mick McCarthy and (I think?) Richard Dunne) to that list.

All played for clubs who were relegated?

    nope thats not it either.

    is it any of these:

    all played into their 30s?
had international careers spanning over a decade?
    all plyed their trade abroad?
all played in leagues other than the PL?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,921 ✭✭✭✭Pigman II

    nope , none of them.

Remember it's something *specific* to those listed. So whilst all that stuff you've mentioned may well be common for all them it's equally probably also true to a bunch of other Irish players who aren't mentioned on that list.

BTW that was 'players sent off playing for Ireland' just to clear up any ambiguity.

There could have been more, but that's all I can remember. I seem to remember seeing an Irish player sent off in one of those 1970's sports-files programs? Might have been in that famous 3-0 win over the USSR?

    (Edit ^^ = + Terry Mancini v Russia 1974)

Antonio Carbajal and Lothar Matthäus doh! missed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,432 ✭✭✭✭Rikand

Do you mean the number of matches they played in the world cup or the actual world cups they went to.....

i dont think cabajal or however you spell would have 20+ games played in the world cup, like i think mattheus has, but they were both to 5 world cups

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,261 ✭✭✭rsta

    im telling you!
    it is carbajal and mattheaus!

    mattheaus for obvious reasons

carbajal was mexicos goalie for someting like 15 or 20 years and each world cup mexico qualified and who was the goalie... yep carbajal!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,432 ✭✭✭✭Rikand

i agree with you, carbajal was at 5 world cups and so was mattheus

but i mean for actual matches played....how well did mexico do at each of these world cups ? were they getting finals and semi-finals each time ? i think mattheus had almost 30 appearances, i dont believe carbajal had close to 30 appearances in the tournament

  • Registered Users Posts: 463 ✭✭ullu

Carbajal was part of Mexico teams that never achieved anything in the World Cup, I don't think any of them got past the group stage, limiting him to 12 or so appearances at most. Definitely Mattahus and probably Maldini

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,921 ✭✭✭✭Pigman II

Wasn't there a centreback from poland who made something like 22 appearances from 74-86?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,953 ✭✭✭blu_sonic

    rsta wrote:

    correct
Most World Cup tournament appearances: Antonio Carbajal (Mexico, 1950-1966) and Lothar Matthäus (West Germany and Germany, 1982-1998), 5

Lothar Matthäus played the most games @ 25 matches

    your question

ps. to settle any ambiguity about the question it asks for tournament apps not games played at the WC

Sir Matt Busby is the answer i believe

I dont have a question though, so i forfeit that to someone else :)

I'll ask the next one if that's ok just because I've got a good question!

Name two pairs of players who play for the same international team that share the exact same date of birth (date and year to clarify)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,921 ✭✭✭✭Pigman II

That's Finnan and Given anyway (don't know who the other pair are tho)

They weren't one of my answers so I looked them up on Wikipedia. It says Given is April 20th 1976 and Finnan is April 24th 1976. I'll narrow it down by telling you both teams are European.

Edit : I checked other sources (BBC say both are April 20)

Well Soccerbase (and even FAI.ie) has them both as 20/4/76 and I'll believe that over Wiki any day.

It has to be Frank and Ronald de Boer surely? Unless twins are against the spirit of the question.....

It's not, maybe I should have worded the question more carefully to state two players who currently play for their national side.

    I'll narrow it down further.

Small hint if you want it :
    Both play in the Premiership
