Help on Unix print issue to VPN users

    Hi, heres the situation.

My company has a private lan.

Currently users RAS in and use a static ip . When they request a print job, the unix server can send the print job to the ipaddress which is specified in the hosts file of the unix box.

Tele workers want to be able to VPN in, and request print jobs from the Unix box. We want the unix box to be able to send the print jobs to the users, but they will have ip addresses assigned dynamically by the ISP.

Have any of you come accross this difficulty, and what is your solution?

What VPN software are you using ? Some seemingly give out virtual IP's to the vpn clients, IP's which are on the same subnet as the LAN.

If this is the case, you could just add these to the hosts file on the unix machine.

Also it may be possible to run a script when a user connects via the VPN. This could update DNS record, or a hosts file possibly.

But, yeah it depends on the VPN server software you are using.

Surely the UNIX box can just send the print job to the IP it recieved the request from ?
