if you are interested in monitoring network bandwidth and ping how about using MRTG; an open source version simular to the paessler product. also on steve shipways site he has made a front end in perl for weekly, monthly stats ect.

theres a hullofalot of bits n bobs that you can configure as well as email alerting graphs stats etc...
