Came across this book recently and having flicked through the contents decided to buy it. The book is based on a conference organised by Harvard to look at future directions in the ICT world which takes place every three years. The most recent one looked at the impact of Broadband.

The book privdes some useful insight into the challenges involved in different areas of the broadband world (primarily in the US environment). Some of the key chapters are:

Chapter Three - Broadband Deployment Looks at the issues facing the two main delivery mechanisms (cable and phone) and the challenges to the new technologies like wireless when trying to break into the market.

Chapter Ten - Wifi Examines the growth of WiFi and how it relates to the 3G arena. In particular it looks at how Wifi can both compliment and challenge 3G.

Chapter Thirteen - The Inevitability Of Broadband Discusses the limitations of the current market based mechanism in promoting the rollout of broadband, and how it hinders the deployment of 'big broadband'. Some of this is very relevant to the Irish situation and there are many echoes of what is happening here.

Chapter Fifteen - Open Spectrum This chapter looks at the history of spectrum allocation in the US and argues that was needed in the past is actually hindering the proper use of the spectrum now and in the future. This is a very interesting chapter, and should be compulsory reading for Comreg, the Minister and anyone with an interest in the use of this key natural resource.

The other chapters also contain some though provoking information on the benfits of broadband, and some of the potential drawbacks. Well worth a read!
