Im looking for some opinions, Im about to buy one of the following cars,
A Honda CRV EST 2.0 or a Mazda Premacy 1.8. The two cars have all mod cons. The Honda is a 1998 and has about 60,000 miles and the Mazda is a 2000 with only 19,000 miles. The two are the same price.

    Here's my line of thinking......

    Honda
    Pro's

    Looks much better
    much more reliable
    easy to sell on

    cons

    Heavy on the juice
    higher milage
    higher tax
    two years older than mazda

    Mazda

    Pro's

    Low millage
    newer

    Con's

    Not as reliable than Honda
    Not as nice looking

Opinions would be great, At the moment im edging towards the Honda even though its older and more millage.

    Thanks

Honda. It's not that heavy on the juice. Did you consider buying a Nissan X-Trail?
The two are the same price

    What price would that be?

10,000 for them both but i should get either for a bit cheaper.
No i haven't thought about the Nissan at all, is it any good?

The X-Trail is too new, you wouldn't get one for €10k.

    To OP:

First of all 60k miles on a 1998 car and 19k miles on a 2000 car is nothing but it depends on how they were driven and how they were maintained.

Also the Honda is a SUV not an estate which probably means it has 4WD whereas the Mazda is a medium size MPV.

The Honda cost alot more when new as is more desirable which would explain why a 1998 one is worth the same as the 2000 Mazda Premacy. Now the Honda is a 2.0 petrol so if it is 4WD then this will have an impact on fuel economy as the 4WD setup makes the vehicle heavier. So if your worried about mpg and unless you really need 4WD I would seek out a 2WD version. Unfortunately the CRV was not available in diesel back then.

The Mazda was based on the last Mazda 626 so most mechanical parts are straight from it. It was not a very popular MPV in Ireland so resale values are low.

I'm not sure what your needs are but both these vehicles are aimed at different markets, the Honda being a SUV and the Mazda a family MPV.

If you need a SUV then the Honda CRV is a good dependable car but an alternative would be the Toyota RAV4 or Suzuki Vitara.

If you need a MPV then really there are better more practical MPVs out there than the Mazda Premacy. Take a look at the Opel Zafira, Seat Alhambra or Ford Galaxy.

    Here are a few examples:

By the way I think €10k for the Premacy is too expensive.

It's funny how Lexus and Toyota come out tops in other survey's and aren't even mentioned in the top 10 of this one. I mean come on, a Daewoo and Fiat more reliable than a Lexus or Toyota? Sorry, next survey please.. :(

All those survey are bullsh1t ! You are relying upon folk to give a report based only upon their BAD experiences !

Anyway I would go for the Mazda. They dont have a reliability problem and Hondas are usually overpriced IMO. A 20,000 mile car would be easier to trade in next time around, I mean I know it sounds obvious but if you kept either for 3 years and put on 40k you could still trade in the Mazda to pretty much any garage whereas the Honda would have 100k on it and it would deffo be a trade car and priced accordingly !

I must diagree with the reliability league, a bit strange Toyota isn't on it and everyone knows how good they are.

Good luck with your new car :)

Can't really go wrong with the Honda there. My brother in law was considering buying a CR-V a year or so ago and had one for a while to test drive. Apart from it being Japanese in every respect (plastics galore, looks like it was designed by an automaton), I couldn't fault it at all for the type of car, especially in the 2.0 liter petrol automatic version - the very version you're after getting. And that's after reading loads of reviews about it too

Let me re-phrase the last bit: "everyone knows how reliable they are" ;)
