Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Ireland/seedings for Euro 2008

I was watching Sky Sports News when they mentioned that England's game against Poland is still important in terms of the draw for Euro 2008, because if England top the group they could become top seedings.
This got me wondering about Ireland's situation; we can still top the group, finish second, third or fourth. What implications would those positions have on us? What about the fact that we've dropped places in the world rankings, does that have any effect?
I know first priority is tomorrow night and getting to the World Cup, but I was curious about this.

I read somewhere today that if we fail to even make the playoffs, in the next seedings we will be drawn from the 4thgroup. This would have dire ramifications, as then are chance of been drawn with 3 teams who are ranked better then us in Europe would go up, and we would most definately be drawn in much tougher groups.

I think we're 4th seeds for Euro 08, regardless of where we finish in our group now.

I'll do the seedings up after tomorrow's match but if we win we'll most likely be 3rd seeds. Top 2 qualify automatically with no playoffs.

I think that's a much better system personally, and I hope they adopt something similar for the next World Cup Qualifying campaign.

No I think he's just saying 'the two best runners up in UEFA tommorow will qualify automatically for WC2006'

But yes I agree with you. I think the play-offs are a terrible idea and should be scrapped asap. Especially considering teams are required to already play 10-12 just to even get to that stage! Groups should be reorganised so that the top 2 qualify automatically.

Actually, i think he does mean the top 2 from each Euro qualifier group will qualify for Euro 08. There'll be enough teams to have equal size groups.

Really? Ok fair enough. That good news to me anyway.

Yeah you're right. Seven qualifying groups. Six groups of seven teams and one of eight teams. That should be fun!

There are only 7 groups so 4th seeds isnt as bad as it was in the past.
    Thats teams 22-28 in Europe.

Thanks for that table eirebhoy. Thats a fair enough reflection. We are about 25th best in Europe at the moment and at the same level as Scotland and Israel. Here's hoping for a lucky draw with the likes of Germany (A) perhaps, who seem to be in decline, Greece (B), who's victory at Euro 2004 is still absolutely remarkable and a team that also seems in decline, and maybe Slovakia are the easiest from the C-level.

All in all, qualifying for Euro2008 will be more difficult if we are seeded 4th, and our aim will be at least to finish with enough points to warrant going back up to the 3rd rung. That should mean all-out attack in most games as a win and a loss is better than two draws.

Damn! And I was so looking forward to drawing Switzerland again! I'm sure we'd have beaten them this time round  I guess they can let out a collective sigh of relief and thank their lucky stars that they're hosts.

    Holland
    Italy
    Serbia/Montenegro
    Republic of Ireland
    Austria
    Belarus
    Liechtenstien

Liechtenstien out of the basement teams are the best. They've come on leaps and bounds in the past couple of years considering they have a population of 30,000 and only a few teams.

    Remember 1995? 0-0 ring a bell?

So Greece dont automatically qualify as winners? Judging by their most recent qualification campaign, they will struggle to qualify for the Euro's in 2008. Would this be the first instance whereby a defending champion won't actually be able to defend? (Similar to the Pool I suppose, although after much moaning the rules were changed to suit them, could something similar happen for Nick and his mates were they to fail to qualify?)

Its a sorry situation for Ireland, as I left Landsdowne last night I pondered when we will ever be in a major championship again, being 4th seeds in a qualification group doesn't really inspire much confidance.

Automatic qualification for defending European Champions has been aboloshised for at least 20 years !!!.
It's also gone for the World Cup since this campaign, Brazil had to qulaify this time

The rules were changed to suit the winners of the WC and EC btw. No country wants to play two years of friendlies before a major championships, you cant prepare properly.

There has never been automatic qualification for the EC champs.

Id still rather them over Azerbaijan and Kazakstan .

Bulgaria is the worst team of the 3rd seeds not Slovakia .

    Greece
    Romania/Poland
    Bulgaria
    Ireland
    Iceland
    Armenia
    San Marino

Is about as easy as it gets in a 7 team group .

    LOL

Those seedings should gaurantee that the team regains its underdog status for a while!

Yeah, it's a bit of a disaster, but what can you do? If we have a new manager by then, then I think we might be able to get the results that push us back into the C bracket, but I can't really see us qualifying unless we are very lucky in the draw.
