    Thinking about getting a 2004 / 2005 D4D avensis.
Any owners out there willing to share their
    experiences with this car. Thanks

Cannot speak for the diesel version but I have a 1.8 Luna petrol version of the current model since 2003 and 65k miles later it hasn't given a bit of bother. Plenty of toys including, dual zone climate control, 8 speaker sound system, traction control, electric folding mirrors plus auto lights and windscreen wipers (though they can torment you at times). Also plenty of room in the rear for passengers and a baby seat, the boot is also big and the split folding rear seat is very handy. It is also very comfortable for long distance journeys, is solid on the road but is a heavy car so the 1.8 can feel a bit strained at times especially from take off.

If you are buying one go for the Strata or Luna model as these have the better specification.

The 2.0 D4-D has 110bhp which is this day is not great considering the PSG 1.6 HDi engine pumps out the same. The D4-D can also be a small bit noisy at idle but is pretty refined when on the move. Reliability wise they will probably go forever, mpg should be very good along with resale value.

The parents have an 02 (previous shape) one. The engine is pretty much identical though.

It is very powerful, and I can only compare it to a 1.6 Avensis and a 1.8 Mondeo TD, and it absolutely devours both of those. It has about 280Nm torque so overtaking is quite good (PSA has closer to 215??).

It isnt all that fuel efficient, and it only gets about 42 ish mpg, which is possibly worse than my Mondeo 1.8TD. The style of driving has something to do with this, but they dont come close to the VAG 1.9 TDIs (although the newer ones dont seem to be as good as the onld 90bhp unit). As Diesels go however it is not noisey, and is quiet in comparison to most.

Yes, resale value is very good. Reliabilty is very good but even Toyotas can have their moments (the old 2.0 TD had a headgasket problem, the 1.6VVTi engines were replaced en masse, our D4D had a clutch issue...)
