Can i ask the people with high pings :
1st : how many processes are running on your windows system( should be about 23-30)
2nd : if you have a firewall, what firewall do you have.(software firewall's will slow connwction by about 20%
3rd : services what services are running and do you need them

1: The amount of processes running at any one given time has absolutly no effect on ping times.

    2. So, where did you pull that from? your ass? cite me some evidence to back this up.

    3. once again, services and system processes have nothing to do with ping times.

Stop making broad assumptions. while it is true certain services (eg spyware, viral processes) can interfere with ping times, the sheer vast majority of the people involved (my self included) can only assure you that it most certainly is not a case of a "software firewall" or other such nonsense. it is irish broadbands complete lack of moral fortitude, network planning or competancy. they deserve to be shut down for the travesty of a service they offer.

That is all bull, unless you are runnning p2p apps or some other bandwidth using application, processes won't have any impact on your bb speeds.

I'm with NTL, I have many processes running, I use a software firewall and a hardware firewall and I get almost perfect speeds all the time.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 108 ✭✭arcane99

I have noticed something over the past few days...

During the day, my speed is between 26 kbps and 49 kbps allday.
But after 11.00pm the speed flies up. I tracked it overnight with PRTG Traffic grapher while downloading Fedora Core 3 Disc 1 (500mb) from a UK server and it peeked at 11.45pm @ 903kbps and never went under 225kbps until it finished.

Checked download speed @ 10.00am and we are back to 40 kbps.
Contention? or just a crap network layout.

Similar to the clip in the simpsons, where they showed traffic flowing through the internet, until it hit a cisco router and it stalled and an old man had to hit the router with a broom to get it moving again.

    1: 42
2: I used to have one. It might have added about 0.001ms to my ping time, i can't really remember. Sorry, i tell a lie, it was closer to 0.000001ms.
    3: Yes i need em. I wouldn't run em unless i did.

I can pingplot any number of graphs that place the blame square in IBB's own network. Its not our fault, its quite obviously theres. Speaking of which, the connection seems to have calmed down enough to allow me to attempt to play CS... for the first time in well over a month. I'll be back to bitch if it isn't smooth.

People keep slating n0tsane for his comment but I agree with him.

And so to explore it a little, I decided to do an experiment.

I started up one of my windows PC's and did 100 pings to www.boards.ie.
FYI, I have 34 processes running.
    And i got

    Ping statistics for 82.195.136.36:
    Packets: Sent = 100, Received = 97, Lost = 3 (3% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 14ms, Maximum = 1399ms, Average = 87ms

I then killed the processes i didnt want like my antivirus and software firewall. then I went to services and disabled the services I don't need, like the Windows Updater, Infra red configuration client, AV updater, remote registry etc. All of which are taking up bandwidth, no matter how miniscule.

and now with only 24 processes running I got:

    Ping statistics for 82.195.136.36:
    Packets: Sent = 100, Received = 100, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 13ms, Maximum = 1308ms, Average = 71ms

And i thought, thats hardly conclusive, so I did it again, and got...

    Ping statistics for 82.195.136.36:
    Packets: Sent = 100, Received = 100, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 13ms, Maximum = 1320ms, Average = 74ms

Feel free to try it your self.

has anyone thought of using some monitoring software to check their ping and bandwidth to see any trends. i use mrtg http://www.mrtg.com.

It gives you a record which is independant of IBB records for comparison. apparently they use some kind of simular software to create the graphs the "tech support" people send out if you ask.

    Sunday 11.00pm

Well I am just after trying the connection on a clean reinstall of win 98 without anything running, i.e, firewall, antivirus, etc and the pings are still dirt, packetloss at 25 percent and connection at 34kbps.

I am downloading picasa from google (5mb) and the transfer rate is 5.12KB/sec.

If you think the problem is with your machine, then ping something on your LAN instead of introducing a gazillion failure points by pinging boards.ie. Your test is practically worthless as it stands.

Can anyone post the list of tests the IBB support staff email to you to test after you complain...I am still waiting for Peter from Tech support to send them to me since Thursday.

    Nope, from past experience using
to "see the network, pinpoint the problem" (as it's advertised to do) i managed to successfully find out that my connection from my PC to my router was taking a whopping 1ms with 0% packetloss. Router to IBB Mast was taking between 3-200ms with approx 0.3% packetloss (i cna live with that) but three hops into IBB's network packetloss jumped to (at the worst of times) 50%. On average though packetloss was between 10% and 15%.

The gazillion failure points all pointed at a specific router in IBB's network, which i told at least 3 lvl 1 techs (they NEVER put me through to level2 and level2 never called me back...) and i sent in at least 4-5 screenshots of said graph to level1 tech's (i can only assume they were sent on to level2).

I might have posted up a graph or two here before, check my previous posts if you really want to see one. If ya can't find one, i'll hunt it out of my sent mail (if its still there).

Can anyone post the list of tests the IBB support staff email to you to test after you complain...I am still waiting for Peter from Tech support to send them to me since Thursday.

    Dear Customer,
In relation to your connection problem i would like you to run a few tests and record the data so we can trouble shoot this for you.

    1) Please go to the following site ftp://ftp.heanet.ie/mirrors/ftp.debian.org/debian/ and try to download the file named ls-lR which is 27Mb in size. Right Click this file and save to the desktop on the PC. If you are using Internet Explorer please double click on the named file and choose "save as" and this will show a window with download speeds. Delete this file when finished. Please record the download speed on a screen shot and attach it to this mail. This is important as it will update this open ticket.

    2) Please do a ping test by completing the following:-
Click Start/Run and type CMD (For Windows 98 Type Command), when the DOS window opens please type ping -n 100 www.google.com please record the result either as text or a screen shot. we do not need all the pings just the summary report at the end

    3) After this test please do a tracert using the DOS Window test by typing the following "tracert www.google.com" and record all data from this test.

    4) Save all this information and email to us.

Once we have this we will be in contact with you within 24 hours to update you on the issue.

    Regards

    Irish Broadband Customer Support

    hope this helps
