Is a php accelerator such as zend in use or are they too pricey for the model?

How about offering a two-tiered service : free with ads, small sub for ad-free?
Obviously mods exempt, and maybe other loyal users measured years x activity for example. Just a thought, if the calculations point to affording more horsepower, more activity, and more revenue in a virtuous circle it might just be worth considering.
