Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

What should I be on the look out for? Could it simply be the old clock wasn't working on it, and was replaced? Or is it more likely to be something else?

I'll be honest, I've absolutely no idea. First thing I'd be doing is verifying the milage. If you walk into any BMW dealership, and ask can you have the key read (milage and other things stored on the key - should be free) then check with whats on the clocks.

If you intend on keeping it for a while, first job you need to get done is blank the swirl flaps. Then I'd suggest an EGR clean. Have your mechanic check the rear springs, they're prone to snap in e46's anyway.

Did the 138bhp suffer from swirl flaps too?

Also its an import so a cartell (cheap because its over 8 years) would be the first port of call.

I don't think they were as bad, but it's not something I'd be willing to chance at all. Any sort of catastrophic engine failure that can be prevented, jump at the chance tbh.

New (part-worn) tyres fitted Friday. Once it was back on all 4 we realised it'd be grand - in a straight line!

So had to drive home looking like a dragster with standard wheels/tyres on the front until I could have a proper look yesterday. Got the bumper off, gently encouraged the lower mounting brackets into a new position :D and now have 305-70-16's fitted with no fouling

    275632.png

    275631.png

    275630.png

If I'm honest though, I really don't think I can live with them everyday. The noise is pretty intrusive and the extra weight means the torque-converter is finding it a struggle to lock-up. So these will probably be saved for off-road playing as soon as I can source another set of wheels or tyres for everyday use.

Looks mental in the meantime though :pac:

Cheers. Its seriously clean for a car not far off 300,000 kms. Its not too bad on fuel if you take it easy, although I'll probably eat my words come January when it becomes my daily driver.

They're an absolute cvnt on fuel on the motorway, never mind urban driving. I had a loan of a '99 one for a weekend to go down the country in shortly after I sold my 735. Used 25% more fuel on the exact same trip than the V8!:eek::eek:

Nice coupe. Might I suggest a Japanese size plate for the front instead of square. It'd be slightly wider and slightly shorter than what you have there.

For the impact that I saw there Gary the integra took it well!

That was quite a shunt

Just unlucky you didn't cop him, looked like a mix of the A pillar in the way and trying to see what the corolla was at.

I'm sure she'll be right as rain dead quick :)

I had a civic spinning to my left. The driver of the yellow car then drove across the track after he spun. I was completely boxed in

Jesus thats an awful position to be in. I have to say though the car took that scale of an impact really well!

So back from my 680km trip, picked up a 2004 Subaru Outback (Scooby #2 for me, this is the 2005+ model outside Japan) powered by the 3.0litre flat 6 (EZ30). Got it very cheap (NZ $6000) as it has lots of mileage (at least by NZ standards, at 268k KM) and some paintwork scraps (though it is an Outback, thats the point). Also the drop links or front bushings are noisy. And the display is in Japanese. Car will do me for a few months till I get setup here.

There is no motor tax here and (optional) Comp insurance was NZ $503.

    20131015_153916_zpsa7be6673.jpg20131015_153936_zps63da1559.jpg20131015_161502_zpsbaa5178e.jpg20131015_175600_zps0754369f.jpg
    20131015_165555_zps439810d4.jpg

Its 250bhp, tiptronic, naturally aspirated and got a decent 12.1KM/Litre (which is 8.2L/100km or 34.1mpg). Very smooth, nice sound, fast when punched.

    Its got:
Full electric windows and seats, A/C, electric folding mirrors, cream leather interior, full display and sat nav (in Japanese..), boot mat, boot cover, 6CD Slot loader and MiniDisc player(!).

Going to fix the drop links and get a set of Rota Grids plus decent tyres (4 Triangles on it right now!).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,480 ✭✭✭YbFocus

    Nice looking machine :)

Rota Grids would look sweet as hell!

When moving I was concerned that their highways are only 100kph. Upon getting here I found that:

    - People do 120ish anyhow
    - There is stuff along the road so you feel like you are driving much faster
    - And the best bit? Thats SH1 (main route from Auckland to Wellington if you go across the middle as opposed coastal) "100kph" up the side of a mountain, through a Stevio Pass series of bends (about 20km of it), through the "Thermal Explorer" road (thermal steam coming out of the ground all over the place), across bridge after bridge over rivers and gorges. Through the forested areas. Then through the winding and wavy swamp area. Finally down to the run to Wellington which before you get to the harbour is flat like Holland. Then eventually you come up to the capital, with glittering night lights dotted all along the mountain side down to the sea.

Its all SH1 and its like a rollercoaster.

Well I'm happy to report that I had virtually no issues. There was some slight rubbing on the drivers front corner when the wheel was turned sharp left, but that was easily resolved. Suspension travel was just grand too and didn't get stuck at all. Clearance is tight, but its there which is what matters

Full compression on front drivers side

    Full extension on the rear

And the same rear corner compressed

Have you a job sorted Matt? What field of work are you in?

Yep, Product Manager in IT. Income tax here is way lower (I mean, a lot lower) so disposable income is way higher. And no road or motor tax and cheaper fuel and cheaper insurance ($505 for the Outback with no question of NCB.. not even an option on the form and a foreign driving license).

    To keep on topic:
    20131015_174952_zpsb6199371.jpg
    20131015_170548_zpsb6f4075f.jpg
Thats also SH1, highway through the mountains and by lake Taupo ("toe-paw").

More normal road than the high mountain stuff:
    20131015_151415_zpse7075102.jpg
Note that my side of the road has 2 lanes, every ~5km the single lane on one side switches to 2 lanes for passing (2km stretch for passing then back to one lane), meaning they dont have to build 4 lanes over the length of the country (which is long) but just 2.5 effectively. So you are never stuck behind anything for long (its signposted too), just wait for your sides "turn" at the passing lane!

Road congestion and seemingly potholes arent a problem on the SHx roads, despite tons of huge MACK trucks carrying logs and crap.
