Illegal firearms offences should carry mandatory life sentence Tough sentences would take the guns out of gangland
Fine Gael Deputy Justice Spokesman Damien English TD has called for offences involving illegal firearms to carry a mandatory life sentence in order to prevent the ongoing rise of gangland criminals.

Deputy English was speaking during a Dáil debate on the Criminal Justice Bill 2005.

“With the number of murders and serious crimes involving illegally held arms climbing and showing no sign of abating, this area of crime calls for special provisions.

“Mandatory life sentences for anyone caught in possession of, giving sanctuary to, or hiding illegally-held firearms must be introduced without delay. The word must go out that firearms held illegally have no place in our country and anyone who deals in them, or is in possession of them, has no place in our society.

“No mercy should be shown to anyone who knowingly possesses illegal firearms, or who uses firearms to keep their illegal activities going.

“It’s time that the armed criminals of this country learned some respect for the law and also learned to fear it. The Criminal Justice Bill has the potential to instil fear in armed criminals, but it doesn’t go far enough. My proposals would go a long way towards finally removing the guns from gangland.”

    Oi vey.
“Mandatory life sentences for anyone caught in possession of, giving sanctuary to, or hiding illegally-held firearms must be introduced without delay."
You can see what he's trying to say, but the problem is that strictly speaking, if the gardai were to transpose a digit on your firearms licence, you'd now be facing a mandatory life sentence...
