Experts please tell me how long 3 gigs will last if i play games

Quite a long time I'd imagine if your not d/ling loads of mods, mp3's and donkey pr0n. 3 gigs is helluva lot of pure online-gaming network traffic.

Assuming for a second that game X requires 5 KB to be downloaded every second in order to play smoothly. With this figure, you would have to play that game for 5 hours each day to fully utilise the 3GB monthly limit. However, most people given a broadband link have a habit of downloading movies, patches, warez, mp3s, pr0n etc which would blow through your limit in no time.

A adsl connection will download more than 5kb/sec playing games? my isdn connection does more than that

It depends on the data rate you set when playing the game - in half-life+mods you use the command "rate xxxx" in the console to set the desired transfer rate in bytes. Most modem users will use between 3500 and 4500. DSL would use in excess of 10000 bytes - but many servers limit the maximum bandwidth per client to something like 6000 or 8000 bytes.

Vincent, your line will download as much as is needed by the game per second. For most games this is between 3000 and 10000 bytes per second.

Stephen, the rate command sets the *maximum* amount of data you want the game to download per second, most of the time the game doesn't need to download that much, and so doesn't. For example, if you're playing CS and there's only one enemy left, not much data needs to be downloaded to describe his position/heading etc. However, at the start of a match when you're surrounded by your team milling around, much more data is needed per second to describe what's going on.

That's difficult to say, people's surfing patterns can differ widely. If you visit lots of new graphics-heavy sites you could be downloading an awful lot. If on the other hand you visit the same sites over and over, then your web browser will cache all the graphics on your disk so you won't be downloading much at all..

I know on AC that my "throughput" per hour was (max.) 20MB. This would usually happen only if I was powerlevelling a character. I'd expect HL to be substantially less (excl. mods).
(With the demise of SNL I don't play online anymore)
