micro developer kit

Hi Guys,

Im looking to buy a developer kit for a micro, basically i done very little of it in college and my knowledge of this domain is very limited, im just looking to getting a setup so as to learn at home in my own time (looking at getting some generic 8051 or arm type setup) also i would like to develop skills in hdl, thinking of getting an FPGA setup and practicing some VHDL or verilog, wondering if any of you know of any reasonably priced kits suitable for home use and are not too pedantic/limited,

A very interesting project would be to make your own USB flash drive.
http://www.microchip.com/appnotes and click on "Mass Storage Device" at the very bottom of the page. There is a demo board for this called PICDEM FS USB Demo Board but you can get the schematics from the User Guide on the website and make your own.
