Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Galway Lan Offline

Galway lan will be going offline for 1 or 2 hours during a day... perhaps more, we'll see how the first one goes.

    The idea:
    To promote more socialising
To eat at a specific time - who would be interested in getting the likes of sandwitches and tea from the hotel - I know I would; I constantly eat fast food for the whole lan generally
To promote offline gaming - perhaps a round or two of poker (as someone suggested - I know this takes more than an hour but its just an idea), other games, please suggest. Perhaps some console gaming, anything not networked.

If you are not interested in this please voice ur concerns here. What I intend on doing is actually switching off the switches - so there will be no network activity.

I may also have a session on how to use ur FTP's properly, how to use a mic for team based games.

We want to make the lan more enjoyable for all and this is definately the right direction to go in.

I fully support this idea. Good to see someone willing to shake things up a little, should add to the whole weekend.

I absolutely LOVE this idea...:D sounds good, (just dont make it too long ;) )
I'd definately play a few console games... Bit o Mario Kart... 64 or double dash.
Would networking the consoles be allowed during this "non-network time"(Gettin TV's would be a problem i guess.. :( )

Poker.. interesting idea, could get ugly tho ( money does this..)
any1 got a poker set?? [Fancy (possibly shiny) box containing colourful poker chips and maybe 1 or 2 decks of cards...]
Time wud be an issue tho.

If ur teaching things like FTP, and how to use comms.. maybe throw in some basic networking...anything u need to know to connect ur comp to the LAN, cables, where ta stick em, IP's and network masks blah blah etc etc
(seems basic, but if some1 cant set up voice comms for a game... how is it they know how to network?? :p )
I always hav some irregular problem that i dont understand when im setting up before the LAN..

well i dont like this idea tbh. a lan(local area netowrk) party is computer's hooked up with each other, not to turn off the switches for a hour or two "To promote more socialising" We pay the 30 euro to be at a lan, not to get the netowrk to shut down for a bit of it.

Fair enough your the people orginsing it, you can decided what to do but i think its just stupid, if you want to socialse, whats wrong in going next to them and talking to them for a while?. or else head up to the bar have a cup of tea/sandwich, with them.... Fair enough if you want a cup of tea or a sandwich between the lan, that dosent mean to shut down the whole netowrk.

At most lans, i would head off at any time to get something to eat with some friends, and talk on the way down.. and up to the lan.

its like paying for a full sandwhich and finding a bite in it. 1 or 2 hours isnt that much of 49 hours of laning but some people would be away from some time, they might want to head home for some nice sleep(if live near by) they might have to work, or have to head out one of the days, i just think that if you want to orgainise a certain time for a group of you to head off for the pub or to a bit to eat, then you should do... instead of knocikng down the whole netowrk,

Fair enough if you do, do it i wont complain its your decision.

I can host a kailliera server on my machine for the weekend. It will basically allow ye lot to play numerous old consoles over the network. I.E. a nintendo 64 emu + mario kart+ kailliera support = :)

I've not got an opinion on the above since im a Lan noob, but just looking at the quake turney scheduled for midnight friday and wondering when do you guys switch off the kit for the night?

Maybe the hour or two would be better spent in the pub? Maybe finish up at 9-10 on friday/saturday for a trip to the pub , surely no better way to improve the socialising side of things??!??

(though is might be a problem for the under age lanners)

a round or two of poker
    For money:D
    I like the idea already!

I've not decided when the hour or two offline will be. I'm thinking sometime on saturday and sunday. Lans really die off on Sunday... but this has a bank hol monday, so no excuses...

I reckon we should just announce a break time, get everyone who wants to up to the bar and have a bit of a natter over a few pints and some monkey ball. I'll check with JP and Papa Vaughan but I'd say we could lob a TV onto a table in the bar and play some games.
We shouldn't just turn off the network, there's no real need.
If people are told that there will be a break period at XX o'clock, or if it's included in the schedule, there'll be a better response.

I like this idea, good change and definitly going to shake it up a bit.Might give people a chace to sort a problem they have been having also.

I'll pass on the presentation for the pints.

Sounds good! cept for the whole offline part like toxick said.
I'd would be pretty class to have a pint and play burnout3 or something for a while between tournies or something as a little break... also, I would be needing an explaination about usin the mics through the network, teamspeak and whatnot. Oh, and I gotta learn how to play poker ;D

As for socialising - I dont like the idea that you mods can decide what is and isn't an act of annoyance! Its what I do, drrrrrrrrr....

    Can't wait!!!

You don't think that every1 taking a break,
to eat (and rest your eyes...lol ya right :p ) at the same time makes the LAN more efficient??
Every1 on the servers at the same time, more players playing each game, etc.
Also, i remember the last LAN i was at, people went missing during the Counterstrike competition(i know who it was but i wont mention names ;) ),
and didnt return for an hour or 2 later :( missing the 2nd half of the comp,
leaving one team short a player.... and leaving organisers frantically searching for a sub, which did mess up any kind of team balancing which had been layed out before hand...

That said...it does seem unnecessary to turn off the switchs... if a handful of ppl REALLY want to keep playin, might be best to just let them..
    dont you think?

Jesus lads this is a LAN (LOCAL being the operative word) socialising is part of it, it adds to the whole event. I can see the idea of having a break is good, but if the switches aren't turned off I can see people leeching good oh... which is not something I'd like to see at lans, personally. There will be plenty of time to leech later on at night when nothing is happening. Having a mandatory break; you can get up talk to ppl, go get food with ppl, go get food on ur own, have a pint, play offline games, have a smoke...
I guess you can call this a pilot program if u like, if it doesn't work I won't try it again. Another good point (thanks apocalypse101) is that ppl won't be eating at different times hence staggering competitions etc...
Lets just put it down for a 45 min break so... see how that goes?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,945 ✭✭✭Anima

I think the set times for food is the best idea yet. Many a time people are gone getting food just as we're about to start a tourney. I don't think you should turn the network off though, you could let people leech during that at least or some people might want a 1v1 or something.

Be a social retard if you must.
Anyone else seeing the irony here?

Anyways, sniipe, paek, etc IMO thats a great idea. Pretty gutsy to actively switch off the switches. But definetly the right way to go. Lans would all be so much better if there was a designated social time.
I might even pop in on saturday to say hello. (Ill be in galway that day)

I personally think its a fantastic idea. Sometimes its incredibly hard to just stop playing games unless there is someone there to give you a hand. And lets face it, I've been to about 6 galway lans, including the first one and I know about 9 people who attend them, in RL.

It'd be nice to associate a face with a handle instead of "drake - thats the asshole who killed me at GL IV"
