Following along the lines of the good garages thread I thought it might be an idea for people to post up any rip-off garages they came across and the details. Might be an idea to sticky and might not.

Anyways, I suppose I'll start. The crash repair centre beside the maxol garage near the OMNI in Santry.

This garage quoted me €100 for a electric window regulator and another €120 to fit it.

Instead I went to breakers yard paid €40 for one and installed myself in 30mins

In all fairness I don't think that thats an unrealistic price considering the garage has to go to the scrapyard remove the window regulator, remove the damaged one and replace it. It may be just luck he had one in stock if he specialised in a particular make. Having a garage myself I know only too well how much time goes in collecting, removing and fitting parts especially secondhand parts. When you consider the cost of overheads nowadays a garage has to make a profit or else they won't be there for long. If you want to talk about ripoff's check out what the same job would cost in a main dealership. Small garage's are always getting hammered and regarded as rip off merchants but I can assure you that in most cases they give a better service, are open all hours and at least will try and fix your problem rather than just fit new parts. This is just my opinion.

thats all well and good but the fact that i went to a breakers yard asked em for a regulator waited for 2 mins got one brought back to me and it then took 15 mins to take the old one off and about another 10 to fit the new (and im someone who's never had to change an electric window motor before)

so to put that in comparison the garage would have been paid €120 for 30mins work (not including the €100 they would have charged for the regulator) thing is they'd have probably done it quicker than i did it has well because i was kinda figuring it out as i was going along

i think that would qaulify as a rip-off in most peoples books

Check out the main dealer price. Its fair enough if you can do it yourself but you could apply this theory to any profession.
