just wanna pass on some great volta news...

    :)

PAUL O’REILLY – FIRST THING IN THE MORNING (CD, released Sep 21)

Eight songs from the wee man from Dublin with the cute smile, dazzling finger-picking guitar style and voice of an angel. Having spent the last year playing support to likes of David Kitt, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, Kristin Hersh, January and numerous others, Paul O’Reilly made this home-recorded debut album with the talented Steve Fanagan in Dublin. A gentle folk resonance permeates the record. It is indeed the sound of a city asleep or, at least, ready to wake up. Fading bristles of soundscape noise buzz in the background, as Paul sings looping, mesmerising words. And you can hear every scratch of the fret-board. There’s also Steve Fanagan directed video on the way.

CREATIVE CONTROLE – BLOODRUSH/ THE DOSE (12", released Sep 21)

Key figures in Dublin’s embryonic hip-hop movement, you may have caught Creative Controle live, supporting the likes Jurassic 5, Jeru the Damaja, Mark B & Blade, Cannibus and the Pharcyde. CC are The Expert (beats), DJ Mayhem (cuts) and Messiah J (mic) and this is their debut single on our Volta Beats off-shoot label. Quite simply, it’s one of the most incendiary Irish singles of all-time, audacious, funky, aggressive, complex and led by Messiah J’s mind-boggling balance of battle-talk and conscious intelligence. Keep an eye out for the Bloodrush video, animated and produced by the D.A.D.D.Y. crew, in the coming weeks.

THE FRAMES/ CALEXICO – NEW PARTNER/ CLOTHES OF SAND (7", released Sep 21)

We like to release nice little artefacts from time to time, such as this Irish-American split seven inch of cover versions. The Frames recorded Will Oldham’s New Partner for a BBC Session some time back. We managed to get our hands on that and we’ve paired it up with a cover version of Nick Drake’s Clothes of Sand by Tucson, Arizona’s godlike Calexico. Remember this is a seven-inch vinyl only, limited stock, one for the history books type affair. It also gives us the opportunity to give props to two great record shops – Road Records in Dublin and Toxic Ranch Records in Tucson.

VOLTA SOUNDS NIGHT – WHELANS, DUBLIN, THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 20
