    I have a little suggestion.
Would it be possible to grant people who open threads the right to lock the thread at some future date when the thread has fulfilled its purpose. There are some extremely old threads which occasionally come back to life for no good reason whatsoever (admittedly it was more of a problem before the search function was disabled).
I can forsee that this is something that may be abused by some people- but do think that in balance it would serve more good than harm.

what would happen if we are all happily ripping someone to shreads and they go lock the thread on us!?

Also, occasionally old threads come back to life for perfectly valid reasons.

All they have to do is ask a mod to close it for them.

    Lol.....
What I had in mind was the likes of someone asking a question about some computer components that were sold 2 years ago thinking they were still available etc.

Ruthie- Its all well and good to be tearing people to shreds- and fun too sometimes :), but a Mod would be able to overrule a normal person locking their own thread (at least that was what I envisaged) if the blood letting was justified (of course!). On the other hand if it wasn't justified it might very well discourage muppetry.

Talliesin- I know that old threads do legitimately come back to life for various reasons- it was more a case of obsolete threads that I had in mind.

Hmmmm- I was half thinking along Beruthiel's line which is why I had mentioned it possibly being abused by some people. Maybe I should have put a bit of thought into it.....

I really don't see the point. If a thread I started has gone away from what I wanted to be discussed (or whatever), I just ignore it. There's no need to close it tbh.

    No, for various reasons.

First, a thread isn't your property. This is the same reason you can't delete after it has been replied to.

Second, with the varying nature of boards, there are many somewhat specialist boards where people ask for advice. Nine times out of ten, these people are the least qualified to decide when an answer is satisfactory (the thread has "served its purpose").

Finally (and kinda a mix of one and two), an interesting debate can often arise out of a topic, and the thread owner has no right to deny people this by closing the thread prematurely.

I think you have FS in mind here smccarrick :)

I really don't think it's a good idea to lock FS thread, generally, because it's a useful way to track if a deal goes topsy turvey. Some people might not even think of contacting a For Sales mod, and if the thread is left open its more likely that either one of us will spot it, or a wise regular will report the thread.
