Signed the folks up to esat bt a year ago with broadband.
Gave the Direct debit details and all.

The folks tell me some lady was on from credit control the other day saying they owe €1200.
Dad reefs them out of it asking why they didnt collect a monthly bill and they say the DD was cancelled.
He says he didnt cancel it and furthermore wouldnt be able to as it was a Direct debit.

So they said they'd take €300 a month from Dad by cc for the balance and set up a new Direct debit on his account for the current and future bills.

    Guess what...!
They've now turned off the CPS so he can no longer make calls.
They never said that they would do this and indeed indicated that they needed the direct debit to pay the current and future bills whilst the outstanding would be done each month by credit card untill cleared.

He's now furious and leaving them to go back to eircom.

Well done BT-do that to any more of your good customers did you?
No wonder ye are losing money

Esat BT/BT Ireland screwed up big time, your dad can explicitly indicate that he will pay the outstanding bill but he can dictate the monthly level of payment he would like to make to BT as a result of their failure to collect funds from your dads account.

Try this email address for Mike Maloney (CEO BT Ireland) mike.maloney [at] btireland.com and CC it to Comreg, be nice and explain your situation and how your Dad always acted in good faith and assumed BT were collecting the bill amounts from his account. Ask him to acknowledge that this was a mistake on BT's part and that they acknowledge that your dad, by providing his DD details, always intended to pay BT the due amount.

You could also be cheeky and mention that having read the forums on http://www.btirelandsucks.com/ that you see you are not the only isolated victims of BT Ireland's billing system.[1]

Do keep in mind that he does owe them the money, though.

    Of course...

Obviously your dad will have to pay them monthly at a level he can afford, €100-150 perhaps. €300 per month is a lot, I know I couldn't afford it.

Bottom line, its their mistake and you have some leverage to ask for a discount and to negotiate the repayment terms.
