Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Anyway, on-topic, the only thing that really annoys me about boards is the glut of newbies we get around June/July/August every year, who basically invade and post threads that have been covered at least 1,001 times before, and then get antzy when we tell them to use the search facilities before posting. F**kers.

But ppl are generally lovely here.
    I love the join date.

And so far I haven't see evidence of Seb being guilty of that.

What do you dislike about boards?
That I didn't think of it first and corner the market :)

Really the only thing that bothers me on boards is people who take it way to seriously and think that they 'have' to correct someones opinion, or they 'have' to insult somebody back for some percieved insult. They just don't seem to realise that it's only the internet, and clicking the little X in the top right corner makes it all dissapear.

    What really annoys me?

txt spk - Does it really save you that much time to type 2 instead of "to" or 4 instead of "for"

horrible spelling - Everyone makes the odd typo, but it gets on my nerves when a person's post is riddled with absolutely horrific spelling, could some people just check msword some time? For my sake? C'mon? Pleeeease?

there are plenty of other forum specific annoyances e.g. (Fanboyism in Games), Nout too major though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,037 ✭✭✭✭Basq

One thing i really do hate also along with txtspk which has been mentioned in some respect is acronyms... never use them myself and in my opinion, they are almost (but not quite) as irritating as txtspk.

ROFL, LOL, TBH etc. - hate them all!

I was just bringing an old thread back to the top of the list and was about to say "Sorry for bringing this back up but...." when I thought "Pighead why should you be sorry? It's a good thread."

Where did this "Sorry for bringing this back to the top" come from anyway. Utter sheepspoo in my opinion. Right I'm away to have a read of everybodys old posts and try to entertain myself if no one else.

The smiley menu...simply not enough to get certain things across, meaning that you either have to resort to using an inappropriate one or none at all.
I know the arguments against having more, and I certainly don't advocate animated smileys but we need an overhaul/update.

Spelling/grammar nazis....I rarely suffer them myself but I hate to see someone else's mistake pointed out as a simple way of getting "one up".

...and to completely contradict the above; the f*cking word is ANYHOW....not anywho, anyhoo or some other grammatical bastardisation....don't know why that in particular bothers me, but it does...

boards is still really slow, although there isn't any other software as good as vbulletin. i'd really like the search to be put on again - it's great for finding threads in AH or PI that disappear under the weight of new ones.

i think i preferred the old blog system - it was more integrated with the site. why did they change it?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,129 ✭✭✭Nightwish

the way there is sometimes an air of snobbery about the place and the restrictive nature of dictatorial censorship, although that does have its merits too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,440 ✭✭✭✭Piste

I dislike the way in this new version there is no ''insert text to be linked'' box when you want to add a hyper link so you have to do the whole ]hello[/url] thing.

rb_ie: Most of the spammers/knobheads on this forum are >18, most of the regular young users of boards rarely spam and the ones who use txtspk are quickly dealt with so don't be so quick to attack us young 'uns.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,750 ✭✭✭ghostchant

So people don't like it when newbies start a thread thats been covered before, and also when people drag old threads up...so how old does a thread have to be before the topic can never be spoken of again ;)

The addiction! No wait, I love that!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,440 ✭✭✭✭Piste

I also dislike the way there's a very short cycle of the same threads. ''Should Weed be legaised?'', ''What do you think of Scumbags?'' and 'I hate D4 heads'' are forever cropping up in AH, so we get the same views and opinions voiced and shot down over and over.

I dislike the general air of unkindness (with many and honourable exceptions, but still general), the snobbery, or rather class hatred, the anti-intellectualism from some people and looking-down-from-a-height from others.

On the other hand, it's a place people are always helpful with suggestions, and in the specialised forums they know their stuff.

Love the Hallowe'en look, by the way! Big kudos to whoever designed it. Very cool, very funny.

    why is that????

Because they changed to new servers and are troubleshooting them.

i hate the intolerance that a lot of people seemed to have.

    ie
op: i hate those skateboard dudes outside of the cenral bank
poster 2: yeah, me too, they suck
    poster 3:why?
op : coz they just do...

    i mean...?

i also dislike people that seem to think that any contradiction in an argument is a personal attack on their whole way of life.

    op:i am for abortion
poster 2: i dont agree, i think that the right of choice is priority
op:youre a fúcking idiot, and you obviously dont know anything...
    poster2: er... riiiiiiight.....

and finally, i hate that people think they can abuse anyone or say anything, especially at mods, but if a mod says anything then they are immediately shouted at for being disrespectful and should have more cop on.

    ie

op: you know mr mod, youre a power crazed idiot and full of crap
    me: fúck off.
op: ohh youre a mod. youre supposed to be goody goody. im telling on you
me: fine, fúck off and heres the link to complain on...

people who complain that they havent been unbanned after a week

well guess what. youre ban is for as long as i deem it to be. i dont do week long bans. if youve done something that warrants banning by me, then you must have been a very bad person, becuase i rarely ban people.

if thats the case, then take it as read you are banned on a permantent basis, but i may be nice and let you in if you ask nicely and promise to be a twat in future.

i hate being hungry too, so im going for breakfast

Excessively strict moderation in comparison to other bulletin boards.

Threads being closed rather than let sink naturally.

    Abbreviations and bad grammar.

Random appearance/non-appearance of the search facility.

People who like to wind others up and then triumphantly post 'You took the bait' after admitting that they're only messing. What else do they expect? The smug superiority complex that they have when this happens.

    People who defend chuggers.

People who try and defend the indefensible. I posted a thread some time ago about a record shop employee who had never heard of Led Zeppelin. The point I was trying to make was that this was an appalling display of ignorance. Yet there were people trying to justify this lack of basic knowledge.

What do I dislike about Boards.ie?

    - Certain moderators who are complete cretins
    - The oft-circulated notion that the people who run this site are Irish net gurus, despite the fact that (a) upgrades to the site take days, and (b) it's basically an out-of-the-box software package
    - The ridiculously complex menu at the top of every page
    - The fact that the search facility has been down for weeks

Overall I really like Boards but the only gripes I have are......

the egos of some of the mods (these are a minority)
some of the muppets who get kicks out of insulting people
excessive spamming, lack of intelligent posts from some users
how slow it can be at times (thank god for the new server!)

apart from that it's great and a fantastic tool.

Keep up the good work admins/most of mods!

i dont like the way some posters post all the time but actually say nothing. overall im happy with boards, though i do agree that the mods can be a little too strict (or maybe thats because i have a slight tendancy to go of topic :) )

to the people who do it - DON'T

    1. This has been done before threads.
    2. Locked threads are still here - delete them or whats the point of keeping them?
    3. No option to delete posts.
    4. The BOARDS.IE logo top left is bad - what are those 2 little dots in the 'O' doing?

They may have good info in them.
    3. No option to delete posts.
Well there is within a 24 hour window IIRC. PLus if it's really an issue PM one o the mods who may help you out.
    4. The BOARDS.IE logo top left is bad - what are those 2 little dots in the 'O' doing?
It's a face and it's smiling with the eyes.

Interesting zombie thread to compare then and now(about when I joined first). Some stuff is still an issue it seems, other stuff has long been sorted(search for example).

EDIT some of the names are a real blast from the past and mad and a little sad how so many good posters have just faded away.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.
