Is there any way to update your directX without going through microsoft.com ?

hehe, em you might find it on another game disk, or download the redist on another computer;) but check first that it is a directx problem, it may well be something else, go start -> run -> dxdiag, look at the bottom and see if it's version 9.0c or not

The Direct X the game 'installs' doesnt update anything - you have an ATI card right?

If so, go here http://www.2kgames.com/civ4/support_ati.htm : I had to try the second option at the end of the page, unpacking the Art file, to get the game to work on a PC with an X800XL.

Once it loaded, it would then CTD with no error every time I tried to end turn 1 - updating my drivers from the Cat 5.10s to the newest Omega ones solved this.

Yeah this is apparently a problem with most ATI cards. Amazing that they didn't catch it in testing........
