An interesting little piece on a list of songs that 1000 radio stations across the US have been advised not to air in the wake of september 11th:

    http://slate.msn.com/code/chatterbox/chatterbox.asp?Show=9/17/2001&idMessage=8314

Some of the songs that made the list, as far as I can see, have no reason for being there, even John Lennon's Imagine appeared it.

American goes into insane P.C. mode. I'm sorry, but this is just ludicrous. I understand people can be upset, but what are they trying to achieve here?

If this is what society starts to do to itself, then the terrorists have already won. They have altered society through their acts.

Oh for the love of ......

John Lennon - "Imagine" - wtf?!!!!!
Cat Stevens - "Morning has broken"
Black Sabbath - "War Pigs" - one of THE most scathing anti-war songs you'll hear!
Metallica - "Enter Sandman", "Fade to Black"
Pat Benatar - "Love is a battlefield" - COME ON!!!
Bangles - "Walk like an Egyptian"
Alanis Morrisette - "Ironic" - I ask "What does this have in it that's 'questionable'??"
Led Zepplin - "Stairway to Heaven"
The Beatles - "Lucy in the sky with Diamonds", "Obla Di, Obla Da"
    Jimi Hendrix - "hey Joe"
U2 - "Sunday Bloody Sunday" - wow .. Sunday has a lot to do with Tuesday doesn't it?
Elvis - "(You're the) Devil in Disguise
Simon & Garfunkel - "Bridge over Troubled Water"
Hollies - "He ain't heavy, he's my brother"
    Don McLean - "American Pie"
Red Hot Chillie Pepers - "Under the Bridge"

And there's a few more besides that just SHOULD not be on that list!!

    This is just ludicrous!

Lordy, dont you remember Mr. Playitsafe, who was afraid to fly; he packed his suitcase, and kissed his kids goodbye, he'd waited his whole damn life to take that flight, and as the plane crashed down he though "Well isnt this nice".

Also, when the song is played backward it contains references to the taliban and a general assortment of other bad things.

Well that is just stupid. They may as well close everything down in the USA and live underground. Some of those songs I do agree with but alot of them are just stupid.

I heard that they're going to ban all references to Jesus. He was a cult leader from the middle east. Had many ties to Palestine.

    Pathetic!

No other word is springing to mind at the moment.

No, it doesn't - but the lyrics have some relevant meaning:...

    e.g.:

    --

I can't believe the news today / Oh, I can't close my eyes / And make it go away

Bodies strewn across the dead end street / But I won't heed the battle call

And the battle's just begun / There's many lost, but tell me who has won / The trench is dug within our hearts /And mothers, children, brothers, sisters / Torn apart

And it's true we are immune / When fact is fiction and TV reality / And today the millions cry / We eat and drink while tomorrow they die

    --

    Get it now?

... oh - and as for:

    Don McLean - "American Pie"

A melancholy ending with a drawn out "this'll be the day that I die" - plus emphasis on those very words throughout the rest of that song.

(edit: plus, it was dedicated to and written *about* a singer - who's name escapes me - who was killed in a horrible plane crash.)
    --

I'm not saying I agree with this censorship (I MOST CERTAINLY DO NOT AGREE WITH IT!) - I'm just giving 2 examples of how the presence of probably all those songs on this list can be justified/explained. They're certainly trying to cover all the bases and take no chances...

That would be Buddy Holly (with Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper who were also on the plane)(the three singers were also among those who voted for Sideshow Bob in his fixed election on the Simpsons)

I see "knockin' On Heaven's Door" by Bob Dillon (sic) and Guns 'n' Roses is also undesirable (which presumably leaves them clear to play the extremely awful Dunblaine version)
